Radish-Laden Protest in Tumakuru Spotlights Farmer's Bribery Allegations
In a striking display of rural dissent, a farmer from Dodderi Jakkenahalli in Tumakuru district staged an unusual protest outside the Madhugiri taluk office on Thursday, using freshly harvested radish to highlight alleged bribery demands by revenue officials and delays in civic works. The incident has drawn widespread attention to grassroots governance issues in Karnataka.
Farmer's Frustration Boils Over into Creative Demonstration
Prasanna Kumar, the protesting farmer, arrived at the office with his scooter piled high with radish and a handheld megaphone, after officials reportedly failed to act on a Lokayukta order to construct an approach road to his farmland within a month. Having waited nearly two additional months with no progress, he took matters into his own hands.
"I escalated this issue all the way to the Chief Minister and Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda," Prasanna stated. "I received a letter instructing officials to take action, but nothing happened on the ground." Hailing from Home Minister Parameshwara's home district, he emphasized his inability to pay bribes, offering his agricultural produce instead as a symbolic gesture.

The protest quickly gained traction on social media platforms, going viral and prompting senior administrative figures to intervene. Gotur Shivappa, the Assistant Commissioner of Madhugiri, informed The Times of India that he had directed the tahsildar to address the farmer's grievance on a priority basis.
However, revenue officials contested the bribery allegations. Srinivas, the Tahsildar of Madhugiri, argued that the core issue stemmed from a familial dispute rather than administrative negligence. He clarified that the previous tahsildar had already resolved the petition by facilitating an 8-foot-wide road.
"An asphalted road already provides access to his land," Srinivas explained. "The current demand involves a dispute among relatives over an adjacent parcel of land." He added that officials had visited the village and settled the matter, though Prasanna's protest suggests otherwise.
