Recent rainfall in the Western Ghats has brought much-needed relief to farmers in North Interior Karnataka, with increased inflows into rivers expected to boost agricultural activities. Farmer leader Bhuvaneshwar Shidlapur said the inflow from the Western Ghats would greatly benefit farmers along the riverbanks.
Positive Impact on Agriculture
The rains have replenished water sources in the region, which had been facing dry conditions. According to Shidlapur, the enhanced water availability will support irrigation for crops such as paddy, sugarcane, and pulses. The inflow is particularly crucial for farmers in districts like Bagalkot, Vijayapura, and Gadag, who rely on river water for their livelihoods.
Challenges in Coastal Areas
While the rains have been beneficial inland, coastal areas like Uttara Kannada district have faced challenges. Sea erosion washed away the toilet block of a house at Tarangmet village in Ankola taluk, highlighting the vulnerability of coastal communities to extreme weather events. Local authorities are assessing the damage and planning mitigation measures.
The rainfall in the Western Ghats is a key factor for the region's water security. The Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, play a vital role in the monsoon patterns of Karnataka. The current rains are expected to sustain water levels in major reservoirs, supporting both drinking water and irrigation needs.
