Rajasthan CM's '25-Day Farming' Remark Sparks Political Firestorm

Rajasthan Chief Minister's Farming Remarks Ignite Political Controversy

A major political controversy has erupted in Jaipur following remarks made by Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma about farmers' working patterns. The comments, delivered during the curtain raiser event for the upcoming Global Rajasthan AgriTech Meet (GRAM 2026), have drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties and sparked a heated debate about agricultural labor and government attitudes toward the farming community.

CM Sharma's Controversial Statements at GRAM 2026 Event

Speaking at the preparatory event for GRAM 2026, scheduled to take place in Jaipur from May 23 to 25, Chief Minister Sharma made several observations about contemporary farming practices that have since become the center of political storm. The Chief Minister stated, "My farmer, who secured first position earlier, has now reached the 3rd position. Such a big change has happened. Our farmer can reach the first position if he farms using modern methods and profit-oriented techniques; no one can earn more than the farmer."

Sharma elaborated further on his perspective, questioning the current work patterns in agriculture. "If our farmer fully understands his duty and works diligently in farming, he won't face any losses. However, he is only working for 20 or 25 days, or a month in a year, yet he wants to strengthen his entire economic situation and food supply for 11-12 months. Is that possible?" he asked the audience.

The Chief Minister continued with specific observations about farming routines. "Most farmers don't work more than 25-30 days; they only go for sowing and harvesting, and occasionally watering the crops for 2-4-5 days. If you establish a routine of working 4 hours regularly in farming, our farmer can still come first. We have sidelined our farming. If you don't value farming, why would farming value you?"

Sharma also addressed issues of water management and urban migration affecting agriculture. "Water flows from the fields of many farmers, but does not reach the storage. They cannot utilize that water. However, today, farmers do not have the time. I know because most have started living in cities. Who will look after their farming? Don't ruin farming in this way," he cautioned.

Opposition's Fierce Reaction and Demand for Apology

The response from opposition leaders was immediate and forceful. Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully launched a scathing attack on the Chief Minister's statements, demanding an immediate and unconditional apology. Jully declared that the "annadata of the state will not tolerate this insult," using the term that translates to "food provider" to emphasize farmers' crucial role in society.

Jully accused Sharma of mocking farmers' "back-breaking hard work" while speaking from the comfort of a 5-star hotel venue, characterizing the incident as clear evidence of the ruling BJP's anti-farmer ideology. "The CM's '25-day farming a year' remarks were not only far removed from ground reality but also deeply wound the self-respect of the hardworking farmers," Jully asserted.

The opposition leader painted a contrasting picture of agricultural reality, highlighting the extreme conditions under which farmers labor. Jully emphasized that farmers already face severe burdens including shortages of essential resources, fertilizers, and seeds. He further claimed that many farmers are being forced to migrate to cities due to policies implemented by what he termed the "Double Engine" government, referring to the BJP administration at both state and central levels.

Broader Implications and Political Fallout

The controversy has quickly escalated beyond mere political sparring, touching upon sensitive issues of agricultural dignity, rural livelihoods, and government perception of farming communities. The timing of the remarks—during preparations for an international agricultural technology meet—has added layers of irony to the situation.

Political observers note that the incident reflects deeper tensions between urban and rural perspectives on agriculture, as well as differing views on modernization versus traditional farming practices. The demand for apology has become a rallying point for opposition parties seeking to highlight what they perceive as government insensitivity toward agricultural communities.

As the controversy continues to unfold, all eyes remain on whether Chief Minister Sharma will issue any clarification or apology, and how this incident might impact the upcoming GRAM 2026 event scheduled for late May. The political storm shows no signs of abating, with farmers' organizations and agricultural groups expected to weigh in on the developing situation in coming days.
