Rajasthan Farmers Face Devastation as Unseasonal Hailstorms Ruin Crops
Unseasonal rain and severe hailstorms have swept across Rajasthan, causing extensive damage to standing and harvested crops. Farmers are reporting heavy losses in key crops such as isabgol, cumin, wheat, and mustard, while accusing the state government of delaying ground-level crop assessment and compensation. Despite the weather now settling, relief has not reached affected farmers, and market prices remain weak, exacerbating their financial distress.
Widespread Crop Destruction Across Districts
Reports of heavy rain and hail have emerged from multiple regions including Jaipur, Ajmer, Didwana-Kuchaman, Nagaur, Jalore, Dausa, Bikaner, Churu, Sikar, and Beawar. In these areas, mature wheat and mustard crops ready for harvest were flattened by the intense weather conditions. In Sriganganagar's Arjunsar and Rajiyasar regions, an afternoon hailstorm blanketed fields in white, damaging both standing and harvested produce.
Khajan Singh, a farmer from Patti Khiyan village, described the severity: "Hailstones were unusually large. I have not seen such intensity in many years." He noted that even harvested wheat was impacted, with nearly 90 quintals turning black due to moisture, rendering it unsellable.
Specific Crop Losses in Western Rajasthan
In western Rajasthan, farmers in Jaisalmer and Barmer reported extensive damage to cumin (jeera) and isabgol crops. Maman Khan of Masudi village in Jaisalmer stated, "Isabgol gets damaged with excess moisture. Nearly 70% of my crop is destroyed." Similarly, in nearby Sarwari village, Kripal Singh said his isabgol crop on six bighas was completely wiped out, with around 900 kg of harvested produce ruined after the hailstorm.
Farmers also highlighted damage to wheat left in fields after harvesting due to the rain. In Dhodsar village of Sikar district's Dhod tehsil, Ram Singh shared his plight: "My wheat crop was just days away from harvest, but the hailstorm flattened it completely. The grains are falling and the quality is ruined."
Financial Strain and Market Impacts
The crop damage has led to significant financial losses for farmers who invested heavily in seeds, fertilizers, and irrigation. One farmer expressed frustration: "We invested heavily in seeds, fertilizers, and irrigation. Now, not only has the yield reduced, but whatever remains may not fetch a fair price in the mandi."
Traders and farmers anticipate lower arrivals in agricultural markets, including Jaipur mandi, in the coming weeks as damaged crops reduce marketable output. This is expected to further weaken prices, adding to the economic pressure on farming communities.
Calls for Government Action and Relief
Farmer groups are demanding immediate crop surveys and timely payouts. Rampal Jat, national president of Kisan Mahapanchayat, criticized the government's response: "Relief efforts remain limited to announcements, with little visible action on the ground."
Farmers across districts cited rising input costs and weak prices as debt pressures grow. They warn that without quick compensation and better market returns, more households may be forced to sell livestock, mortgage land, or migrate for work to survive the crisis.
Official Response and Assessment Efforts
Officials stated that crop assessments are underway in affected areas and urged farmers to report losses through designated channels. They emphasized the importance of completing documentation for claims under existing schemes for insurance, credit, and procurement to facilitate relief measures.
The situation underscores the urgent need for coordinated efforts to support Rajasthan's agricultural sector in the wake of this natural disaster, ensuring farmers receive the assistance they need to recover and sustain their livelihoods.
