Rajasthan Sees Sharp Rise in Traffic Challans in 2025, Deputy CM Highlights Road Safety Drive

In a significant disclosure during the Rajasthan Assembly session, Deputy Chief Minister and Transport Minister Prem Chand Bairwa announced on Friday that the state witnessed a robust enforcement of traffic regulations in 2025, with police issuing a staggering 27.61 lakh challans for various violations across Rajasthan. This figure underscores a heightened commitment to road safety norms, as emphasized by Bairwa, who stated, "This reflects our seriousness in enforcing road safety norms."

Breakdown of Traffic Violations and Year-on-Year Increase

Responding to supplementary questions raised by MLA Kalpana Devi during the Question Hour, Bairwa provided a detailed breakdown of the challans. The data revealed that over-speeding accounted for the highest number of violations, with 12.06 lakh cases recorded. Other major infractions included 5.23 lakh challans for not wearing helmets, 1.96 lakh for not wearing seat belts, and 69,000 for drunken driving. Notably, the total number of challans issued in 2025 showed a substantial increase of 10.13 lakh compared to the previous year, 2024, indicating a significant intensification of enforcement efforts. Bairwa remarked, "Compared to 2024, 10.13 lakh more challans were issued in 2025. This shows that enforcement intensified."

In addition to police actions, the transport department independently contributed to this enforcement drive by issuing 6.95 lakh challans during the same period, further bolstering the state's comprehensive approach to traffic management.

Institutional Measures and Road Safety Committees

Emphasizing the institutional framework supporting these efforts, Bairwa highlighted the implementation of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, which mandates the constitution of road safety committees at multiple administrative levels. At the district level, the Road Safety Committee, chaired by the district collector, plays a pivotal role in reviewing accident-prone areas and addressing safety concerns through regular meetings. Bairwa explained, "At the district level, the Road Safety Committee, chaired by the district collector, reviews accident-prone areas and safety concerns in regular meetings."

Furthermore, sub-divisional committees, operating under the supervision of sub-divisional officers, are tasked with addressing local traffic management issues and implementing accident prevention strategies. These layered committees ensure a coordinated and proactive approach to enhancing road safety across Rajasthan, from urban centers to rural locales.

The announcement in the Assembly not only sheds light on the quantitative aspects of traffic enforcement but also reaffirms the state government's dedication to reducing road accidents and promoting safer driving habits among citizens.
