Rajasthan Government Announces Electric Double-Decker Bus Initiative for Three Major Cities

The Rajasthan state government is actively preparing to launch a fleet of modern electric double-decker buses in three of its prominent cities—Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Udaipur—with an ambitious target to have them operational by the end of this year. This strategic move is designed to significantly improve the public transportation infrastructure, offering a more efficient and enjoyable travel experience for both local residents and the numerous tourists who visit these destinations annually.

Procurement and Funding Details

In a significant development, the Jaipur City Transport Services Limited (JCTSL) issued a tender on February 28 for the acquisition of 50 state-of-the-art electric double-decker buses. According to the procurement plan, Jaipur will receive the largest share with 30 buses, while Jodhpur and Udaipur will each be allocated 10 buses. JCTSL's Managing Director, Naryan Singh, confirmed these details to TOI, highlighting a key distinction in funding: unlike other low-floor electric buses being procured under the centrally supported Pradhan Mantri E-bus Sewa Scheme, these double-decker buses will be entirely financed by the Rajasthan state government.

"Our objective is to have these buses up and running before the peak winter season of 2026. If all proceeds according to schedule, we anticipate receiving the initial shipments around Diwali this year," Singh stated, underscoring the government's commitment to timely implementation.

Route Planning and Strategic Objectives

While the specific routes and exact allocations for the double-decker buses are still under careful consideration, JCTSL officials have emphasized that the primary goal is to connect key tourist attractions, city airports, railway stations, and major bus stands. This approach aims to create a seamless and integrated travel network, thereby boosting accessibility to important locales across Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Udaipur.

An official involved in the planning process explained, "The Comprehensive Mobility Plan for Jaipur proposes 25 bus corridors throughout the city. We are in the process of finalizing routes along these corridors, taking into account existing infrastructure factors such as the conditions of old flyovers, railway over bridges (RoBs), underpasses, and height barriers along the proposed paths."

Broader Impact and Environmental Benefits

As these three cities, renowned as major tourist destinations, prepare for this new development, the introduction of electric double-decker buses represents a forward-thinking initiative to promote eco-friendly transportation. By reducing carbon emissions and enhancing public transit options, the project aligns with broader environmental sustainability goals while catering to the growing demand for efficient urban mobility.

This initiative is part of a larger effort by the Rajasthan government to modernize public transport systems, improve the overall travel experience, and support the state's tourism industry. The deployment of these buses is expected to not only facilitate easier movement within the cities but also contribute to reducing traffic congestion and promoting a greener urban environment.
