Rajkot Municipal Corporation Approves Revised Budget, Prioritizes Citizen Welfare Over Tax Hike
The standing committee of the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) has taken a decisive step by unanimously approving the revised budget for the financial year 2026–27. In a significant move, the committee rejected the Rs 95-crore tax increase that was initially proposed by the municipal commissioner in the draft budget presented just last week.
Focus on Infrastructure and Public Services Without Financial Burden
Presenting the revised budget, which amounts to Rs 3,604.90 crore, standing committee chairman Jaymin Thakar emphasized the political wing's commitment to citizen welfare and infrastructure development. The budget aims to avoid placing any additional financial burden on the residents of Rajkot. Thakar stated, "Our goal is to ensure that the people of Rajkot get full value for their taxes through better services and greater satisfaction." This statement was made during a media address, highlighting the administration's focus on transparency and public accountability.
Election-Year Incentives: Interest Waiver Scheme for Tax Defaulters
In what is being viewed as a strategic election-year initiative, the RMC has introduced an interest waiver scheme for property and water tax defaulters. This scheme offers substantial relief to residents who have outstanding dues:
- Residents can avail of a waiver of up to Rs 5,000 on interest for unpaid property tax.
- An additional Rs 5,000 waiver is available on interest for water tax dues.
The scheme is set to come into effect immediately and will remain in force until March 31. Civic officials estimate that approximately 50,000 properties out of the nearly 6 lakh in the city have pending property or water tax dues. This announcement has garnered significant attention in political circles, especially with the civic body elections scheduled to take place after April.
Major Infrastructure and Beautification Projects Funded
The revised budget includes substantial allocations for key infrastructure and beautification projects aimed at enhancing the quality of life in Rajkot. One of the flagship projects is the renovation and beautification of the Racecourse area, with a provision of Rs 10 crore. This comprehensive project encompasses:
- Redesigning internal roads to make them traffic-free zones.
- Widening footpaths to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility.
- Upgrading gardens and increasing seating areas for public enjoyment.
- Creating a special garden specifically designed for persons with disabilities.
- Renovating public toilets and signage to meet modern standards.
Additional Budget Provisions for Urban Development
Beyond the Racecourse project, the RMC has earmarked funds for several other initiatives that promise to transform the city's infrastructure and public amenities:
- Rs 25 crore has been allocated for infrastructure to support 100 new e-buses under the PM-eBus Sewa scheme, promoting sustainable public transportation.
- A pilot project for a SCADA water monitoring system is included to prevent water wastage and improve resource management.
- Development of a gaming zone under the Nana Mauva bridge, adding recreational options for residents.
- Creation of a food zone in Mavdi capable of accommodating 900 people, featuring a 'sky dining' experience to boost local tourism and culinary culture.
This budget reflects a balanced approach, combining fiscal responsibility with ambitious development goals. By rejecting the tax hike and focusing on citizen-centric policies, the RMC aims to foster greater public trust and satisfaction, particularly in the lead-up to the upcoming civic elections. The emphasis on infrastructure, welfare schemes, and urban beautification underscores a vision for a more livable and progressive Rajkot.
