Senior Congress leader and Karnataka minister Ramalinga Reddy has resigned from the DK Shivakumar-led state government, reportedly due to dissatisfaction with his cabinet portfolio. The eight-time MLA from Bangalore was expecting the Bengaluru Development portfolio but was instead assigned the Major and Medium Irrigation department.
Reddy's Allegations of Broken Promise
After signing his resignation letter, Reddy publicly expressed disappointment, claiming that he had been promised the Bengaluru Development portfolio. “DKS promised me Bengaluru Development,” he stated, highlighting the perceived breach of trust. The resignation has sparked speculation about internal tensions within the newly formed Karnataka government, which was constituted just days ago.
Political Implications
This development comes as a setback for the Congress party in Karnataka, which recently formed the government after a closely contested election. Political analysts suggest that the portfolio allocation dispute could indicate deeper factional struggles within the state unit. The party leadership is expected to intervene to resolve the crisis and prevent further damage to the government's stability.
Ramalinga Reddy, a seasoned politician with significant influence in the Bangalore region, had been a key figure in the Congress campaign. His resignation could impact the party's support base in urban areas. Meanwhile, the ruling party has not yet officially commented on the matter, but sources indicate that efforts are underway to pacify the disgruntled leader.
