Ranchi Administration Calls on Business Chamber to Address LPG Crisis

In a decisive move to tackle the escalating liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder shortage, Ranchi Deputy Commissioner Manjunath Bhajantri has formally requested the Federation of Jharkhand Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FJCCI) to actively engage in public awareness campaigns. The objective is to prevent unnecessary panic bookings that are exacerbating the supply crisis.

High-Level Meeting Addresses Supply Chain Volatility

During a crucial late-evening meeting held on Thursday, DC Bhajantri convened with a high-level FJCCI delegation to strategize solutions. He emphasized the indispensable role of the business community in circulating accurate information to calm public nerves. "The Chamber plays a crucial role in this regard, as business organisations can prove highly effective in spreading awareness within society," Bhajantri stated, highlighting their unique reach and influence.

Long-Term Solution: A Push for Piped Natural Gas

As a sustainable resolution to the recurring volatility, the Deputy Commissioner strongly advocated for a widespread shift towards piped natural gas (PNG). This infrastructure is part of the ambitious City Gas Distribution (CGD) project, led by GAIL (India) Limited, which is seeing rapid expansion across Ranchi.

Key developments in the PNG network include:

  • Over 24,000 households in Ranchi are already connected to the PNG grid.
  • Residents in areas with existing pipeline infrastructure are encouraged to apply for new connections.
  • Applications can be made via the dedicated toll-free number: 1800-123-121111.

FJCCI President Reveals Alarming Shortage Figures

The meeting was initiated in response to mounting concerns from the local business sector. FJCCI President Aditya Malhotra presented a stark assessment of the current situation, disclosing a massive backlog of approximately 60,000 domestic LPG cylinders. "The crisis is real," Malhotra affirmed, noting that commercial cylinders are being strictly reserved for essential services such as hospitals and educational institutions.

Severe Impact on Industries and Hospitality Sector

The Federation detailed the profound economic repercussions of the shortage. Numerous industries that depend heavily on LPG for their operations are facing severe disruptions.

  1. Manufacturing Sector: Production lines in almirah manufacturing, plastics, and metalwork industries have come to a complete standstill.
  2. Hospitality Industry: Restaurants and eateries are struggling to maintain operations, with many on the brink of closure.

Malhotra warned of broader economic consequences, stating, "The uncertainty is creating a sense of panic and impacting the overall economic health of the region, leading to a direct threat of labour layoffs."

Administrative Measures and Monitoring

In direct response to the Federation's concerns, Deputy Commissioner Bhajantri outlined the administration's proactive steps. A specialized team of senior district officials has been assigned to conduct continuous inspections of the LPG supply chain. These officials are mandated to submit regular monitoring reports to ensure transparency and accountability in distribution efforts.

Clarity and Assurance Sought from Administration

The FJCCI clarified that their primary goal was to obtain clear, official communication from the district administration. "Citizens and business owners require official assurance to mitigate panic and understand the reality of the distribution mode," Malhotra concluded, underscoring the need for a definitive roadmap to navigate the ongoing crisis.
