Ranchi Residents Endure LPG Cylinder Shortage and Booking Chaos
In Ranchi, a widespread LPG cylinder crisis has left residents frustrated and scrambling for solutions. On Friday, long queues formed at gas agencies across the city as people attempted to refill cylinders and inquire about bookings, highlighting systemic failures in the booking systems of petroleum companies.
Technical Glitches Paralyze Booking Systems
Many residents reported significant difficulties in booking cylinders through designated phone numbers and mobile applications. The Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL) had released phone numbers on Thursday to assist with manual bookings due to a technical snag, but this measure proved inadequate. Consumers complained that most numbers were either unresponsive, continuously engaged, or switched off entirely.
Pritam Oraon, a local resident, shared his ordeal: "From Friday morning, I dialed the numbers repeatedly, but they were busy for extended periods. When someone finally answered, they instructed me to visit the gas agency in person for booking."
Empty-Handed Returns and Growing Desperation
Across various neighborhoods, consumers lined up on roads, hoping to purchase cylinders or check availability. While some succeeded, many returned empty-handed. Asif Iqbal, a resident of Hindpiri, visited a gas agency in Lalpur only to be told about a cylinder shortage.
"I booked a cylinder 15 days ago," Asif explained. "When I inquired with the delivery person on Friday morning, he directed me to the agency. They cited a shortage and asked me to wait several days. With Eid approaching, I urgently need a cylinder but cannot obtain one."
Delivery Delays Compound the Crisis
Nitin Kumar from Kokar highlighted another dimension of the problem: delivery vehicles have not visited his neighborhood for days, causing inconvenience to multiple households. "It has been nearly a month since I last purchased an LPG cylinder. My refill date is approaching, yet I am unable to secure one," he added.
Official Response and Agency Struggles
Ranchi Deputy Commissioner Manujnath Bhajantri acknowledged the issue, stating that the phone lines are flooded with calls, leading to consumer inconvenience. He advised calling between 10 am and 5 pm for bookings and assured that authorities are working with gas agencies to resolve customer issues.
Gas agency owners are also overwhelmed. Dineshwar Singh, an agency owner, reported receiving continuous calls since Thursday night. "There has not been a minute of respite since around 11 pm on Thursday. I am exhausted from the calls. Additionally, cylinders cannot be booked over the phone; customers must visit the agency with a valid card. Many agencies may have turned off their phones to avoid this situation," he said.
Broader Implications and Consumer Struggles
The crisis underscores broader challenges in LPG distribution and digital infrastructure. Key issues include:
- Persistent technical failures in booking platforms and phone lines.
- Inadequate supply chain management leading to cylinder shortages.
- Lack of effective communication between agencies and consumers.
- Increased demand ahead of Eid exacerbating existing problems.
As residents continue to face uncertainty, the situation calls for urgent intervention from petroleum companies and local authorities to restore normalcy and ensure reliable access to essential cooking fuel.
