N. Rangasamy took oath as the Chief Minister of Puducherry for the fifth time on Saturday, marking a historic milestone in the union territory's political landscape. The swearing-in ceremony was held at the Raj Nivas, with Lieutenant Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan administering the oath of office and secrecy.
Coalition Government Formation
Rangasamy's new government is a coalition between his party, the All India N.R. Congress (AINRC), and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which extended outside support. The AINRC won 10 seats in the 30-member assembly, while the BJP secured six seats. The coalition's combined strength of 16 seats gave them a comfortable majority.
Cabinet Ministers Sworn In
Along with Rangasamy, three other ministers were sworn in: A. Namassivayam (BJP), K. Lakshminarayanan (AINRC), and P.M.L. Kalyanasundaram (AINRC). The cabinet is a mix of experienced leaders and fresh faces, reflecting a blend of continuity and change.
Political Background
Rangasamy, a seasoned politician, had previously served as Chief Minister from 2001-2006, 2006-2011, 2016-2019, and 2019-2021. His return to power underscores his enduring popularity and the fragmented nature of Puducherry's politics. The 2021 elections saw the Congress-led alliance failing to secure a majority, leading to the formation of the AINRC-BJP coalition.
Challenges Ahead
The new government faces several challenges, including reviving the territory's economy post-pandemic, addressing infrastructure deficits, and managing fiscal constraints. Rangasamy has promised to focus on development and welfare schemes, particularly for the underprivileged sections.
The swearing-in ceremony was attended by several political leaders, including BJP state president V. Saminathan and other dignitaries. The peaceful transition of power was widely welcomed by the public, who hope for stability and progress under the new administration.
