CM Revanth Reddy Urges Congress Unity Ahead of Crucial Urban Body Leadership Elections
With the battle for control of urban local bodies in Telangana reaching its decisive phase, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has taken swift action to consolidate support and ensure party cohesion within the Congress. As elections for mayoral and chairperson posts loom, the directive from the top leadership is unequivocal: maintain high alertness, foster unity, and secure the electoral mandate.
Strategic Meeting and Directives
At a crucial meeting held on Saturday with ministers and senior party leaders, Revanth Reddy emphasized the need for unwavering vigilance until the elections for mayors, deputy mayors, chairpersons, and vice-chairpersons conclude on Monday. The ruling Congress has set an ambitious target of securing leadership positions in approximately 90 to 93 of the 123 urban local bodies that recently underwent polls.
Sources revealed that the Chief Minister authorized ministers and senior leaders to actively recruit independent candidates and rebels who have won seats and are willing to join the Congress. This strategic move is designed to bolster the party's standing in municipalities where a hung verdict has emerged, thereby enhancing its prospects in the upcoming leadership elections.
The meeting also concluded that candidates elected on other party tickets, but who express willingness to support the Congress, should be permitted to do so. This inclusive approach aims to build a broader coalition and ensure stable governance in urban local bodies.
Focus on Key Municipal Corporations
Revanth Reddy specifically inquired about the political situation in the Karimnagar and Nizamabad municipal corporations, where election results have been fractured. A source present at the meeting disclosed that TPCC president B Mahesh Kumar Goud assured the Chief Minister that the Congress would secure the mayor's post in Nizamabad Municipal Corporation.
Additionally, the CM directed party leaders to engage in discussions with CPI MLA and state secretary Kunamneni Sambasiva Rao regarding the mayor and deputy mayor positions in Kothagudem Municipal Corporation. In Kothagudem, both the Congress and CPI have won 22 seats each, making negotiations critical for determining leadership.
Attributing Success to Teamwork and Welfare Schemes
Congratulating ministers on what he described as an impressive performance in the elections, Revanth Reddy attributed the favorable results to coordinated teamwork among ministers, party leaders, and cadres. He also highlighted the trust reposed by the people in the Congress government.
The Chief Minister asserted, "The Congress government has accomplished more in just two years than the previous BRS government could achieve in ten years." He pointed to the municipal election results as a testament to the development works and welfare schemes implemented over the past two years, which have instilled confidence in the people's government.
Emphasizing the need for continued progress, Revanth Reddy stated that the state must advance further on the path of development while retaining public trust. He instructed ministers to maintain the same momentum in future elections and ensure that the benefits of welfare schemes and development programs reach citizens consistently.
