RJD Unveils Three LDF Candidates for Upcoming Kerala Assembly Elections
The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) has officially announced its three candidates who will contest under the Left Democratic Front (LDF) banner in the forthcoming Kerala assembly elections. The party's state president, M V Shreyams Kumar, made the declaration, revealing the nominees for key constituencies across the northern region of the state.
Candidate Lineup and Constituency Details
According to the announcement, M K Bhaskaran will stand from the Vadakara constituency. Bhaskaran, who also serves as the RJD's Kozhikode district president, is set to face off against Revolutionary Marxist Party (RMP) leader K K Rema in what promises to be a closely watched electoral battle. In Koothuparamba, the party has fielded P K Praveen, who is the nephew of the sitting MLA, K P Mohanan, adding a familial political dynamic to the race. Meanwhile, P K Anil Kumar will contest from Kalpetta, where he will challenge the incumbent MLA and Congress leader, T Siddique. Anil Kumar is an active member of the RJD state committee, bringing organizational experience to his candidacy.
Shreyams Kumar's Decision and Party Strategy
In a significant move, RJD state president M V Shreyams Kumar reiterated that he will not be contesting in this election cycle. He emphasized that his decision is aimed at creating opportunities for new faces within the party, allowing others to try their electoral luck. This stance comes despite internal demands from party members urging him to run from constituencies like Vadakara or Kalpetta. Kumar's withdrawal underscores a strategic shift towards fostering fresh leadership and broadening the party's appeal among voters.
Notably, the party did not consider Manayath Chandran, who had contested and lost in the previous election, indicating a preference for new candidates over past contenders.
Emerging Internal Rift and Leadership Changes
Soon after the candidate announcement, signs of a rift emerged within the RJD, highlighting potential internal discord. The party removed Sabah Pulpetta from his position as state general secretary, a move that has sparked controversy. Pulpetta has stated that he will address the media on Thursday to discuss the matter further. Prior to his removal, he had publicly expressed dissatisfaction, arguing that there was no point in the party continuing its alliance with the LDF if it was not allotted at least five seats. This development suggests underlying tensions regarding seat-sharing agreements and party strategy.
LDF's Support for Independent Candidate in Koduvally
In a related development, the LDF has announced its backing for RJD state general secretary Saleem Madavoor, who will run as an independent candidate in the Koduvally constituency. This decision follows the LDF's previous attempt to retain Koduvally in the 2021 elections through Karat Razak, who ultimately lost to Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) candidate M K Muneer. The move to support Madavoor reflects the LDF's ongoing efforts to strengthen its position in the region and leverage alliances to secure electoral victories.
The upcoming Kerala assembly elections are poised to be a critical test for the RJD and its LDF alliance, with these candidate announcements and internal dynamics shaping the political landscape in the state.
