RJD Holds Crucial Strategy Meeting for Rajya Sabha Elections in Bihar
A pivotal meeting of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and its allied partners was convened in Patna on Tuesday to devise a comprehensive strategy for the impending Rajya Sabha elections. Emerging from the discussions, Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, the party's national working president, conveyed unwavering optimism regarding the success of their candidate.
Confidence and Unity Among RJD Leadership
Tejashwi Yadav addressed the media post-meeting, stating, "The discussions at the meeting were very positive and we are confident of our candidate's victory. We will win the elections." This assertion underscores the party's determination to secure a seat in the Upper House of Parliament.
Adding to this sentiment, senior RJD MLA Bhai Birendra emphasized the party's numerical strength, claiming they possess sufficient support from legislators. "Right now, we have 41 MLAs in our support and we hope their numbers will increase. There is no worry for us," he remarked, highlighting the solid backing expected from their members.
Election Dynamics and Opposition Challenges
The Rajya Sabha polls in Bihar have become a contested affair, with six candidates vying for five seats set to become vacant next month. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has fielded five candidates, while the RJD has renominated businessman-turned-politician Amarendra Dhari Singh.
Interestingly, the entire opposition bloc comprises 41 members, precisely the number required for the RJD candidate to triumph, contingent upon unified voting. However, the Grand Alliance, which includes the RJD, holds only 35 MLAs, with the remaining six belonging to the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). Notably, these two parties were not invited to the strategy meeting.
Strategic Omissions and Alliance Maneuvers
An RJD leader explained the absence of AIMIM and BSP representatives from the meeting, indicating that the party leadership is actively engaging with them separately to garner support. "We can't say whom our party will support. The matter is under discussion," stated Akhtarul Iman, the state AIMIM chief, who confirmed they were not invited and are consulting with their central leadership.
On the other side, the NDA, with 202 members in the state assembly, is poised to secure four seats comfortably but requires three cross-votes to ensure victory for its fifth candidate. The opposition, meanwhile, is banking on potential discontent among Janata Dal (United) MLAs, fueled by reports of internal discord over leadership issues, which might influence them to vote for the opposition candidate.
This electoral scenario sets the stage for a closely watched political battle in Bihar, with both alliances maneuvering to maximize their gains in the Rajya Sabha.
