Bihar's RLM Makes Formal Appeal to BJP for Kushwaha's Rajya Sabha Return
In a significant political development from Bihar, the Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM), a crucial constituent of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), has formally appealed to the Bharatiya Janata Party leadership to renominate its national president, Upendra Kushwaha, to the Rajya Sabha. This appeal comes amidst growing uncertainty regarding Kushwaha's political future as his current term in the Upper House of Parliament approaches expiration.
Five Rajya Sabha Vacancies Emerge from Bihar in April
The political landscape is set for change with five Rajya Sabha vacancies scheduled to arise from Bihar in April 2024. These vacancies result from the retirement of several prominent NDA leaders, including Rajya Sabha deputy chairperson Harivansh Narayan Singh, Union minister Ram Nath Thakur, and former Union minister Upendra Kushwaha himself. Additionally, two Rashtriya Janata Dal members, Prem Chand Gupta and Amarendra Dhari Singh, will also complete their terms.
Given the RJD's diminished numerical strength within the Bihar state assembly, the election of any RJD candidate appears highly improbable. However, similar uncertainty clouds the prospects for Kushwaha's re-nomination, despite his party's alliance with the ruling NDA coalition.
RLM Leaders Express Hope Amidst Political Calculations
RLM legislator Madhav Anand addressed reporters on Thursday, stating, "The tenure of our esteemed leader Upendra Kushwaha is concluding shortly, and we maintain optimism that he will be renominated." Anand emphasized that in a democratic framework, every political entity possesses the right to articulate its demands, though the ultimate decision rests with the BJP's senior leadership.
Expressing confidence in the NDA's electoral prospects, Anand added, "We are assured that all five NDA candidates from Bihar will secure victory. However, the specific identity of these candidates remains unknown to us. We remain hopeful that Kushwaha ji will be among them. It is prudent to refrain from extensive commentary on this matter at present."
Post-Election Commission Announcement, Demands Intensify
Following the Election Commission's official announcement of the Rajya Sabha poll schedule, RLM's chief spokesperson, Ram Pukar Sinha, reinforced the party's demand for Kushwaha's renomination. Sinha argued, "When the NDA secured an impressive 202 out of 243 seats in Bihar during the recent assembly elections, Kushwaha's substantial contributions must be duly acknowledged. He has unequivocally earned a Rajya Sabha position through his dedicated service."
This public appeal underscores the RLM's strategic push to secure representation for its leadership within the national legislature, highlighting the ongoing negotiations and power dynamics within the NDA alliance in Bihar.
Internal Dynamics and Dynastic Politics Concerns Surface
Informed political sources reveal that during the Bihar assembly elections, the BJP had initially consented to renominate Kushwaha to the Rajya Sabha while also allocating a seat for another RLM member in the Bihar Legislative Council. However, complications arose when Kushwaha appointed his son as a minister despite the latter not being a member of any legislative house at that time.
A senior RLM leader, speaking on condition of anonymity, disclosed, "Kushwaha ji attempted a strategic maneuver by inducting his son into the ministry. Consequently, he may now prioritize his son's nomination to the legislative council over his own Rajya Sabha renomination." The leader further noted that Kushwaha's party secured four assembly seats, one of which was won by his wife, Snehlata Kushwaha.
The leader expressed skepticism, stating, "It appears unlikely that the BJP will endorse three members from the Kushwaha family simultaneously holding legislative positions. Such a move would contradict the party's public stance against dynastic politics, potentially exposing its campaign against Parivarvad."
