A Zila Parishad member from Rohtak, Jaidev Dagar, was allegedly detained by local police on Saturday while he was traveling with supporters to Jantar Mantar in Delhi to join a protest organized by his party. Dagar, who is associated with the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), had earlier organized a demonstration in Rohtak last month against alleged paper leaks.
Detention and Release
According to Dagar, he left for Delhi before 7 am, and police vehicles began following him from the Kharawar bypass. He and his supporters were detained near Sampla town. Dagar questioned the police about the reason for stopping him, but they took them to the Sampla police station without providing any explanation. He was released later in the evening.
Dagar's Statement
Calling the detention an attack on democratic rights, Dagar asserted that he represents the interests of the youth and their voices cannot be silenced. He said his campaign against anti-people policies would continue and he would keep raising issues concerning young people. Dagar maintained that as a Zila Parishad councillor, he represents thousands of residents in his ward and is a responsible public representative. Despite this, the police ignored his objections and kept him in detention for several hours, he alleged.
A video showing Dagar questioning the police over his detention went viral on social media. The incident has sparked criticism from various quarters, with many viewing it as an attempt to suppress dissent.
