Rupali Chakankar Steps Down as NCP Women's Wing President Following Controversy
In a significant political development, Rupali Chakankar has resigned from her position as the state president of the Nationalist Congress Party's (NCP) women's wing. This decision comes amidst mounting pressure and allegations regarding her alleged association with the arrested astrologer Ashok Kharat. Chakankar's resignation was formally submitted on Friday, marking a dramatic turn in the ongoing controversy.
Background of the Resignation
Chakankar had previously resigned from her role as the chief of the state women's commission just last week, indicating a series of steps to distance herself from official duties. The controversy erupted following Kharat's arrest, with some NCP office-bearers from districts like Nashik and Ahilyanagar writing to deputy chief minister and NCP chief Sunetra Pawar. They demanded Chakankar's removal, arguing that the party's image was being tarnished due to her purported connections with the astrologer.
Chakankar's Defense and Statement
Taking to her X handle on Friday, Chakankar detailed her actions and stance. She revealed that she had a telephone conversation with Sunetra Pawar earlier in the day, after which she submitted her resignation letter. In her post, she vehemently denied any involvement in Kharat's financial transactions or alleged misdeeds.
"On the first day of the Kharat case coming to light, I have made my stand clear. I am not even remotely connected with his financial transaction or evil deed," Chakankar wrote. She expressed distress over what she called baseless allegations and emphasized her commitment to transparency. "During the course of investigation, all the facts will come out, but it is painful to see some baseless allegations are being made against me," she added.
Chakankar further stated that she has already communicated with key officials, including the chief minister, deputy chief minister, and Director General of Police, urging for an impartial investigation into Kharat's case.
Additional Allegations and Responses
The controversy deepened with claims from Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sushma Andhare, who alleged that Chakankar had absolved music director Anu Malik in a sexual harassment case. Andhare asserted that after this, Chakankar's son, Soham Chakankar, secured work in a film produced by Malik.
In response, Anu Malik firmly denied these allegations. He clarified that he had not provided any work or favors to Chakankar's son. Malik pointed out that he had first received a clean chit from the National Commission for Women, followed by a similar clearance from the Maharashtra women's commission. "I have not given any work and done no favours to anyone. There was no role given to any person," the music director stated, refuting Andhare's claims.
Political Implications and Future Outlook
This resignation highlights the intense scrutiny and internal pressures within the NCP, particularly concerning ethical standards and public perception. Chakankar's departure from the women's wing presidency could signal a broader effort by the party to address image concerns and maintain credibility amid such controversies.
As the investigation into Ashok Kharat's case progresses, all eyes will be on how the facts unfold and whether further political ramifications emerge. The situation underscores the challenges faced by political figures in navigating associations and allegations in the public eye.
