SAD Unveils Vision to Transform Mohali-Zirakpur Belt into Major Financial Hub
In a significant political announcement, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal has revealed an ambitious blueprint to develop the Mohali–Zirakpur–Dera Bassi–New Chandigarh–Kharar corridor into a premier financial and industrial center of India. The plan, modeled on successful metropolitan regions like Mumbai and Gurgaon, is contingent upon the party's return to power in the 2027 Punjab assembly elections.
Comprehensive Development Ecosystem Announced
Addressing a large public rally in Dera Bassi, attended by thousands despite adverse weather conditions and a last-minute venue change, Sukhbir Singh Badal outlined a holistic development strategy. Accompanied by senior leader N K Sharma, he emphasized creating a robust infrastructure framework to support economic growth.
The proposed initiatives include:
- Establishment of a state-of-the-art IT hub to attract technology companies and startups.
- Promotion of tourism, with specific focus on developing Chhatbir as a key destination.
- Transformation of Dera Bassi into a major industrial center with modern facilities.
- Development of religious sites at Gharam and Kunti Kund to enhance cultural heritage.
Infrastructure and Connectivity Upgrades
A cornerstone of the plan is the introduction of a metro rail network connecting the entire region, supported by upgraded road systems and advanced solid waste management solutions. Sukhbir Badal projected that this metropolitan zone around Chandigarh could be realized within a five-year timeframe, building upon previous SAD achievements like the establishment of Mohali's international airport.
Specific Commitments to Local Development
Responding to community demands articulated by N K Sharma, the SAD chief made several concrete promises:
- Construction of a new hospital in Zirakpur to improve healthcare access.
- Provision of canal water for drinking purposes to address water scarcity issues.
- Upgradation of Handesra to sub-tehsil status for better administrative efficiency.
- Establishment of a girls' college in Lalru to promote higher education for women.
- Promotion of regional language education to preserve cultural identity.
Additionally, Sukhbir announced that N K Sharma would be entrusted with the finance portfolio in a future SAD government, underscoring the party's commitment to regional leadership.
Political Context and Broader Vision for Punjab
In his address, Sukhbir Singh Badal took aim at political rivals, alleging that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Indian National Congress have already formed an electoral alliance for 2027, citing their cooperation in recent block samiti elections in constituencies like Baghapurana, Kotkapura, and Faridkot. He warned voters that both parties have hindered Punjab's progress and advocated for support of regional parties like SAD.
Criticizing AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal for claims about welfare scheme discontinuation, Sukhbir asserted that many key state welfare programs were originally launched by SAD governments. He accused the current administration of reducing or discontinuing benefits under schemes such as old-age pensions, the Aata-Dal subsidy program, Shagun assistance, and scholarships for Scheduled Caste students.
Expansive Welfare and Economic Proposals
Beyond the Mohali-Zirakpur belt, Sukhbir outlined a broader agenda for Punjab's development:
- Tube-well connections for all farmers to ensure reliable irrigation.
- Twelve hours of daytime electricity supply to support agricultural and industrial activities.
- Establishment of a World Skill University with district centers to train one lakh youth annually.
- Interest-free loans of Rs 10 lakh for young entrepreneurs.
- Revival and expansion of the Aata-Dal scheme to ensure food security.
- Increase in old-age pension to Rs 3,100 per month.
- Enhancement of Shagun assistance to Rs 1 lakh for marriage support.
- Free education up to graduation level to reduce financial barriers.
- 75% subsidy for youth venturing into livestock farming, including dairy and poultry.
This comprehensive announcement positions SAD's development vision as a central theme for the upcoming electoral cycle, with the Mohali-Zirakpur transformation plan serving as a flagship initiative to drive economic revitalization in Punjab.
