A devastating incident unfolded in Salem city on Sunday when a farmer lost his life after his tractor fell into an agricultural well. The victim, identified as Venkatesh, aged 46, from Kuranguchavadi, was engaged in work on his field when the accident occurred, leading to a tragic drowning that has left the local community in shock.
Details of the Fatal Incident
According to police reports, Venkatesh was using the tractor to collect gravel with the intention of building a barrier near the well on his agricultural field. His father, K Munusamy, recounted the harrowing moment, stating, "Venkatesh was using the tractor to collect gravel, to build a barrier near the well on our field. He suddenly lost control of the tractor, and it plunged into the well. My son was unable to get out and drowned before my eyes." This eyewitness account underscores the sudden and uncontrollable nature of the accident, which resulted in immediate fatality.
Rescue Efforts Hampered by Complications
Bystanders who witnessed the incident promptly alerted the Suramangalam police and the fire and rescue services personnel from the Shevape station. Upon arrival, police and the fire brigade initiated rescue operations, but these efforts were severely hampered by unforeseen challenges. Diesel and oil from the submerged tractor spilled into the well, creating hazardous conditions that slowed down the recovery process. Firefighters and police struggled for nearly three hours before successfully retrieving Venkatesh's body from the well.
Aftermath and Investigation
Following the recovery, the body was sent to the Salem Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital for a postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. Authorities have registered a case in connection with the incident, and an investigation is underway to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the accident. Venkatesh, who owned a business named Thangam Grill Works in the city, was also an active farmer, highlighting his dual roles in the local economy.
