Sanvordem Locals Threaten Agitation Over Mirabag Bandhara Project

Sanvordem Locals Confront WRD Authorities Over Mirabag Bandhara Project, Issue Ultimatum

Panaji: A heated confrontation unfolded in Sanvordem on Saturday as local residents directly challenged authorities from the Water Resources Department (WRD) following a formal PowerPoint presentation detailing the proposed Mirabag bandhara project. The situation escalated rapidly, with barricades and women police personnel being deployed to separate the WRD officials from the agitated crowd of locals who had gathered to voice their concerns.

Locals Demand Immediate Project Scrapping, Issue Two-Day Deadline

The assembled residents raised numerous pointed queries and vociferously demanded the complete scrapping of the Mirabag bandhara initiative. Tension mounted significantly as the locals expressed profound dissatisfaction with the responses provided by the officials. In a firm directive, they instructed the authorities to thoroughly re-study the matter and return with acceptable answers.

More critically, the community issued a stark ultimatum to the government. They set a strict deadline of Monday for the project to be officially scrapped. Failure to meet this demand, they warned, would result in a significant intensification of their ongoing agitation. "We want the government to immediately scrap the project. If we get no assurance within two days' time, we will intensify our agitation and we will not think twice about taking law and order into our own hands. Our people have protested here for 29 days now," declared local representative Sanket Bhandari, capturing the community's resolve.

Core Objections: Lack of Consultation and Safety Fears

The locals' objections to the Mirabag bandhara project are rooted in two primary concerns. Firstly, they strongly protested that they were not taken into confidence or adequately consulted during the project's planning stages. This lack of inclusion has fueled significant distrust.

Secondly, and more urgently, residents expressed deep-seated fears that the project could pose a direct threat to their homes situated along the riverbank. The potential risk to their property and safety was a recurring theme in their grievances, highlighting a fundamental clash between infrastructural development and community welfare.

The standoff in Sanvordem underscores a growing pattern of community pushback against top-down development projects, where local voices demand greater transparency, consultation, and consideration of their immediate safety and interests before such initiatives proceed.
