Sasikala Accuses DMK of Widespread Bus Shortage in Tamil Nadu

V K Sasikala, a prominent political figure, launched a sharp critique against the DMK-led government in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday, alleging a severe failure in procuring new buses that has resulted in an acute shortage across the state. Campaigning in the delta region, including Peravurani in Thanjavur district, she linked this issue directly to the implementation of the Magalir Vidiyal Payanam Scheme, a free bus travel initiative for women.

Comparison with Previous Administration

During her address, Sasikala drew a stark contrast with the tenure of former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa. "Under Jayalalithaa's leadership, new buses were purchased annually, ensuring no shortages," she stated. "Now, the state is grappling with a widespread shortfall that affects constituencies everywhere." She emphasized that the current administration's inability to manage bus services has created significant disruptions for commuters.

Criticism of Free Travel Scheme

Sasikala strongly criticized the Magalir Vidiyal Payanam Scheme, alleging that it has strained the state's transportation resources. "The government announced free travel for women but is now incapable of maintaining adequate services," she claimed. She further accused ministers of making derogatory remarks about women utilizing the scheme, adding that some women themselves are beginning to question its necessity due to the resulting service gaps.

Allegations of Poor Governance and Heavy Borrowing

Expanding her critique, Sasikala accused the DMK of poor governance despite substantial financial borrowing. "The government has borrowed ₹12 lakh crore and has operated on loans for five years without delivering tangible results," she asserted. She argued that such fiscal management demonstrates inefficiency and called for a change in leadership, stating, "A government that relies so heavily on debt without visible improvements should not be re-elected."

Infrastructure Gaps and Neglect of Villages

Highlighting broader infrastructure issues, Sasikala claimed that many villages in Tamil Nadu continue to lack basic amenities. "Numerous areas suffer from inadequate drinking water, poor roads, and insufficient street lighting," she said. She alleged that villages have been neglected, with development projects focused only on revenue-generating areas like flyovers, while those without such potential are ignored. "These conditions will change when we assume power," she promised, outlining a vision for more equitable infrastructure development.
