Satara District Deploys Water Tankers to Address Growing Water Shortage

In response to escalating water scarcity in the Satara district of Maharashtra, authorities have initiated measures to mitigate the crisis. State tourism and Satara guardian minister Shambhuraj Desai announced on Friday that 17 water tankers have already been deployed to affected areas, with expectations for this number to increase as the situation evolves.

Water Storage Levels and Ministerial Directives

Following a comprehensive review of the district's water resources, Desai revealed that Satara's dams are currently holding approximately 39% of their total capacity, mirroring the levels recorded at this time last year. Notably, the Koyna dam, which serves as the primary water source for the region, contains 35 TMC of water. The minister has issued strict instructions to irrigation officials to prioritize drinking water supplies over agricultural needs, emphasizing the critical nature of the current conditions.

Desai highlighted concerns based on recent India Meteorological Department (IMD) reports, which indicate that the El Niño effect could lead to deficient rainfall in the coming months. "We have directed superintendent engineers of irrigation projects to extend the use of available water stocks until the end of August. Ensuring uninterrupted access to drinking water remains our top priority," he stated.

Historical Context and Current Deployment

Historically, water tanker demand in Satara peaks between April 15 and the first week of June. Last year, the district required up to 80 tankers during the height of the crisis. While 17 tankers are currently operational, Desai anticipates that overall demand may be lower this year. However, he has mandated Tehsildars to ensure that tankers are dispatched within 24 hours of any request to prevent delays in relief efforts.

The deployed tankers are currently serving multiple areas: 13 villages and 90 hamlets in Man tehsil, four villages and three hamlets in Wai tehsil, and six villages and six hamlets in Patan tehsil. Additionally, officials reported that village panchayats in Karad and Khandala have begun acquiring private wells to supplement local water supplies, showcasing proactive community measures.

Livestock and Fodder Management

Addressing potential impacts on livestock, Desai authorized Village Panchayats to access aquifers where necessary to support animal needs. Authorities have also been instructed to prepare funding proposals for cattle fodder and the establishment of cattle sheds if the situation deteriorates. As of now, there is no reported scarcity of fodder in the district, but preparations are underway to handle any future challenges.

This coordinated response aims to manage water resources effectively while safeguarding both human and animal welfare in Satara, as the district braces for potential weather-related adversities linked to El Niño.
