NTK Chief Seeman's Strategic Shift to Karaikudi Faces Multi-Cornered Battle
Seeman's Karaikudi Gamble Faces Tough Four-Cornered Fight

NTK Chief Seeman's Strategic Pivot to Karaikudi in Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections

After a decade of electoral struggles, Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) chief Seeman has strategically selected the Karaikudi assembly segment for his latest political campaign. This move marks a significant shift from his previous attempts in Cuddalore in 2016 and Thiruvottiyur, both of which resulted in disappointing performances where he finished fifth and faced defeat respectively.

Multiple Factors Behind the Karaikudi Choice

NTK cadres, affectionately referred to as 'thambigal' or younger brothers by Seeman, outline several compelling reasons for this strategic decision. Primarily, Seeman's native village Aranayur near Ilayankudi is situated in the adjacent Manamadurai segment. Since Manamadurai is a reserved constituency, Karaikudi emerged as the natural alternative, allowing him to maintain geographical proximity to his roots.

The party's previous electoral performance in Karaikudi provided additional motivation. During the 2021 elections, NTK secured an impressive 23,000 votes here, significantly surpassing the state average and demonstrating existing voter support. Furthermore, the political landscape appeared favorable with neither the AIADMK nor DMK directly contesting the seat; AIADMK had allocated it to the AMMK while DMK assigned it to the Congress party.

A Formidable Four-Cornered Contest Emerges

Despite these advantages, Seeman faces substantial challenges in what has evolved into a complex multi-cornered fight. Congress candidate and sitting MLA S Mangudi wields considerable influence in Karaikudi's interior villages, bolstered by the political clout of former Union minister P Chidambaram and his son Karti Chidambaram, both native to Sivaganga district where Karaikudi is located.

AMMK's candidate Therpogi Pandi presents another formidable obstacle. In the 2021 elections, Pandi garnered an impressive 44,800 votes while competing against both DMK and AIADMK alliances. Local observers note his strong grassroots connections and support from the mukkulathor community, which constitutes the largest caste bloc in the constituency.

Adding to the competition, Thamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has fielded T K Prabhu, a dentist banking on actor Vijay's popularity. Party representatives emphasize Prabhu's social service reputation and position him as a viable alternative to established Dravidian parties.

Confident Campaigning Meets Political Criticism

NTK state coordinator Natarajan Duraiswamy reveals extensive preparatory work beginning in June 2025, with the constituency divided into twelve segments for daily campaigning through street corner meetings, public gatherings, and cycle rallies. While NTK emphasizes Seeman's regional connections, opponents criticize his constituency switching as demonstrating political inconsistency.

Sivaganga district Congress committee president A C Sanchai Gandhi asserts that the election remains essentially a contest between Congress and AMMK, highlighting Karaikudi's historical Congress stronghold status and Mangudi's developmental achievements over the past five years. Congress strategists believe the Chidambaram family's campaigning will significantly boost their candidate's prospects.

Meanwhile, AMMK expresses confidence that the alliance with AIADMK will secure victory, citing combined vote shares from previous elections where BJP's H Raja (allied with AIADMK) secured 54,000 votes and Therpogi Pandi obtained 44,800 votes in 2021.

This intricate political scenario transforms the Karaikudi election into a genuinely competitive four-cornered battle, testing Seeman's strategic calculations against established political forces and emerging alternatives in Tamil Nadu's dynamic electoral landscape.
