Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Tuesday downplayed the recent clash between Shiv Sena and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) corporators in Thane, describing it as a minor disagreement. Speaking to reporters, Shinde said, "Minor bickerings happen in politics. Such incidents are not uncommon and should not be blown out of proportion."
Background of the Incident
The altercation occurred during a civic event in Thane, where tensions escalated between members of the two ruling alliance partners. BJP corporators, including Deputy Mayor Krishna Patil and group leader Mukesh Mokashi, filed a complaint at the Naupada police station against two Shiv Sena corporators for allegedly disrespecting the national anthem. The complaint accused the Sena corporators of not standing up during the anthem and making inappropriate gestures.
Political Reactions
The incident sparked political reactions from both sides. BJP leaders demanded strict action against the accused corporators, while Shiv Sena leaders defended their members, claiming the allegations were baseless. However, Shinde's remarks aimed to calm the situation, emphasizing the need for unity within the Mahayuti alliance.
"We are all working together for the development of Maharashtra. Such minor issues should not affect our collective goals," Shinde added. He urged both parties to resolve the matter amicably and focus on governance.
Police Investigation
Thane police have registered a complaint and are investigating the matter. Officials confirmed that both sides have been summoned for questioning. The case has been filed under relevant sections for disrespecting the national anthem, which carries legal implications.
Meanwhile, local Shiv Sena leaders expressed regret over the incident but maintained that their corporators had no intention of disrespecting the anthem. "This is a misunderstanding. We respect the national anthem and the flag. The allegations are politically motivated," said a senior Shiv Sena functionary.
Impact on Alliance
Political analysts view the incident as a test of the fragile alliance between Shiv Sena and BJP in Maharashtra. While both parties have been cooperating at the state level, local-level tensions occasionally surface. The Thane clash is seen as a minor rift that could be resolved through dialogue.
BJP state unit officials have not commented officially, but sources indicate that the party leadership is in touch with Shinde to ensure the matter does not escalate. The Mahayuti alliance, which also includes other smaller parties, remains intact despite such incidents.
In the past, similar clashes have occurred in other cities, but leaders have managed to patch up differences. Shinde's statement is expected to ease tensions and pave the way for a peaceful resolution.
