Six Rebel MLAs Cross Over to Shinde Faction
In a significant political development, six rebel MLAs from the Shiv Sena (UBT) faction formally joined the Shinde camp on Tuesday, dealing a major blow to the party led by Uddhav Thackeray. The move has intensified the ongoing crisis within the party, which has been grappling with internal dissent and defections since the split in 2022.
Aditya Thackeray Voices Anger
Reacting to the defections, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aditya Thackeray accused the rebels of betrayal, stating that they had abandoned the party's ideology for personal gain. "These leaders have betrayed the trust of the people and the legacy of Balasaheb Thackeray. They have chosen power over principles," he said during a press conference in Mumbai.
The six MLAs, whose identities have not been officially disclosed, are expected to be inducted into the Shinde faction's legislative group. Sources indicate that more defections may follow as the Shinde camp continues to consolidate its position.
Background of the Crisis
The Shiv Sena has been divided since June 2022 when Eknath Shinde led a rebellion against Uddhav Thackeray, taking a majority of MLAs with him. The split led to the collapse of the Maha Vikas Aghadi government and the formation of a new coalition government led by Shinde with support from the BJP.
Since then, the Thackeray-led faction has been fighting legal battles to retain control of the party and its symbol. The recent defections are seen as a setback for the UBT faction, which has been trying to rebuild its base ahead of the upcoming local body elections.
Impact on Political Landscape
Political analysts believe that the defections could further weaken the Shiv Sena (UBT) in Maharashtra, where it is already struggling to maintain its relevance. The Shinde faction, on the other hand, has been gaining strength, with several UBT leaders expressing dissatisfaction with the party's leadership.
Aditya Thackeray, however, remained defiant, asserting that the party will overcome the crisis. "We will emerge stronger. Those who have left were never loyal to the party's cause. We will continue to fight for the people of Maharashtra," he said.
The development comes ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, where both factions are expected to contest fiercely. The UBT faction's ability to retain its remaining MLAs and grassroots workers will be crucial for its survival.
