Land Ownership Dispute Over Shivaji Statue in Solapur Village Remains Unresolved
The ongoing deadlock regarding the determination of land ownership in Anjangaon village, located within the Solapur tehsil, where a statue of the revered Maratha warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj has been erected, continued without resolution on Friday. This persistent impasse has heightened tensions in the area, prompting urgent police intervention to prevent further escalation.
Police Intervention and Negotiation Efforts
In response to the escalating situation, Special Inspector General of Police Sunil Fulari arrived in Mohol, a town situated near the contentious village, on Friday evening. His primary objective was to initiate and facilitate negotiations between the two opposing communities involved in the dispute. The police presence aims to broker a peaceful settlement and restore calm to the region.
Root Cause of the Conflict
The core of the conflict stems from a clash that erupted on Wednesday evening between two communities over the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, which is installed adjacent to a local temple. One community asserts that the land under the statue is the property of the state public works department, arguing vehemently against its removal on this basis. Conversely, the other community claims that the land rightfully belongs to a temple trust, a contention that directly led to the violent confrontation between the groups.
Failed Agreement and Allegations of Interference
Late on Thursday night, it appeared that a temporary resolution had been reached, with both communities agreeing that a formal land survey should be conducted to conclusively verify the ownership of the disputed property. However, this agreement quickly unraveled. Madha MLA Abhijeet Patil highlighted that external elements are attempting to disrupt the peace process, stating, "On Thursday night, both communities from the village had arrived at a solution. However, some leaders who are not from the village are trying to disrupt the talks and peace."
Patil specifically referenced Laxman Hake, a prominent leader of the Dhangar community, who has since arrived in the village. Former MLA Rajan Patil, now affiliated with the BJP and who attempted to mediate between the factions, echoed similar allegations. Hake, in response, has denied these accusations and instead countered by claiming that the entire controversy is orchestrated by MLA Patil himself, further complicating the negotiation landscape.
Heightened Security Measures
In light of the sustained tension, law enforcement authorities have implemented stringent security protocols. Barricades have been erected along the main roadway traversing the village to control movement and prevent unauthorized access. Access to the vicinity of the temple and the statue has been completely restricted, with police personnel ensuring that no individuals are permitted near these sensitive locations.
Commemoration Amidst Conflict
Adding a layer of poignancy to the situation, Friday marked the death anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Some villagers expressed a desire to honor the occasion by garlanding the statue, a request that was denied due to security concerns. In a gesture to acknowledge the sentiment, the police performed the garlanding ritual on behalf of the residents, balancing respect for tradition with the imperative of maintaining public order.
