Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is facing growing pressure from his own aides to take a more active role in addressing internal conflicts within the Congress party. According to sources close to the chief minister, several of his close associates have urged him to speak up on party matters and intervene to stop the ongoing bickering among Congress leaders.
Infighting Among Muslim Leaders
The immediate trigger for the concern is the infighting involving Muslim leaders over allegations of anti-party activities during the April 9 bypoll in Davangere South. The bypoll, which was crucial for the party, saw a faction of Muslim leaders being accused of working against the official Congress candidate. This has led to a public spat, with leaders trading allegations and counter-allegations, causing embarrassment to the party.
Aides Call for Intervention
Several of Siddaramaiah's aides have expressed concern that the infighting could damage the party's image and unity ahead of upcoming elections. They argue that the chief minister, being the senior-most leader in the state, must assert his authority and bring the warring factions to the table. "The chief minister cannot remain silent on such matters. He needs to speak up and ensure discipline within the party," said a senior Congress leader close to Siddaramaiah.
The aides have also pointed out that the infighting is particularly damaging because it involves Muslim leaders, a key vote bank for the Congress. The allegations of anti-party activities have created a rift that could alienate the community if not addressed promptly.
Party Response
The Congress party's state unit has so far tried to downplay the infighting, describing it as "internal differences" that will be resolved soon. However, the persistent public bickering has forced the leadership to take note. Party insiders say that Siddaramaiah is likely to convene a meeting of senior leaders to discuss the issue and find a way to restore unity.
Meanwhile, the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has seized on the infighting to attack the Congress, accusing it of being a divided house. BJP leaders have demanded that Siddaramaiah come clean on the allegations and take action against those involved in anti-party activities.
The Davangere South bypoll was won by the Congress candidate, but the margin of victory was narrower than expected. The infighting among Muslim leaders is believed to have contributed to the reduced margin, as some Muslim voters may have been confused by the conflicting signals from their leaders.
As the pressure mounts, all eyes are on Siddaramaiah to see how he handles the crisis. His aides are confident that he will rise to the occasion and take the necessary steps to end the infighting. "The chief minister is aware of the situation and will act in the best interest of the party," said one of his close associates.
