Farmers and landowners from approximately 33 villages, organized under the Bhumi Bachao Sangharsh Samiti, staged a protest at the Sitamarhi collectorate on Monday against the acquisition of land for the proposed satellite township, Sitapuram. A large number of villagers participated in the demonstration, raising anti-government slogans and denouncing what they termed as a 'black law' designed to seize land to appease corporate interests.
Protest Details
The protesters gathered in significant numbers, voicing their strong opposition to the government's plan. They argued that the land acquisition would unfairly displace farming communities and benefit only large corporations. The demonstrators handed over a memorandum to the District Magistrate (DM), outlining their grievances and demanding the immediate halt of the acquisition process.
Government's Proposal
The government has proposed the development of Sitapuram, a satellite township, near the Punaura Dharm Goddess Janki temple. This project is part of broader urban expansion plans in the region. However, affected villagers claim that the acquisition process lacks transparency and adequate compensation, leading to widespread unrest.
The protest underscores the ongoing tension between development initiatives and the rights of local communities. The Bhumi Bachao Sangharsh Samiti has vowed to continue their agitation until their demands are met, warning of further escalation if the government proceeds without addressing their concerns.
