Sarbananda Sonowal Amplifies BJP's Election Drive Across Upper Assam
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal significantly intensified the Bharatiya Janata Party's election campaign throughout Upper Assam on Friday, delivering a series of powerful public addresses. He spoke at rallies in Margherita, Majuli, and Khowang to bolster support for party candidates Bhaskar Sharma, Bhuban Gam, and Chakradhar Gogoi, respectively.
Margherita Rally: A Call to Protect Assamese Identity
Addressing a massive gathering at Inthem Naga Pathar in Margherita, Sonowal positioned the upcoming election as a pivotal moment far beyond ordinary political contests. He described it as a critical juncture for the Assamese people. "This is not merely an election rally—it is a platform of resolve to safeguard the self-respect, identity, and fundamental rights of the Assamese people," Sonowal proclaimed. He invoked the historical legacy of Swargadeo Chaolung Sukapha to emphasize Assam's profound and enduring cultural heritage.
Sonowal robustly defended the performance of the BJP-led alliance government in Assam, highlighting several key achievements. He pointed to land rights secured for hundreds of thousands of families, eviction drives to reclaim illegally encroached land, and various measures he characterized as essential for preserving indigenous heritage. "Today, Assam has entered a new era characterized by peace, comprehensive development, and renewed confidence," he asserted. The Union Minister urged voters to endorse the National Democratic Alliance's vision for a self-reliant Assam within the framework of a developed India.
Sharp Criticism of the Congress Party
Sonowal reserved his most pointed remarks for the Congress party, leveling serious accusations of long-term neglect and political betrayal. "The Congress party committed a grave and enduring injustice to Assam. For decades, it deliberately encouraged illegal infiltration to sustain its vote-bank politics, thereby severely weakening the social and cultural fabric of the state and diminishing the rights of indigenous communities," Sonowal charged. He further alleged that Congress had brutally suppressed the youth during the historic Assam Movement, adding with emphasis, "Such actions can never be forgiven or forgotten by the people."
Majuli Visit: Personal Appeals and Development Promises
In Majuli, Sonowal adopted a more personal and warmer tone, extending heartfelt Rongali Bihu and Assamese New Year greetings to the residents. He made a deeply personal appeal, rooted in his own political history with the constituency. "When I first came to Majuli in 2016 as a chief ministerial candidate, the people blessed me with immense love and unwavering support. I consider Majuli as my mother, which has nurtured and profoundly shaped my entire political life," he expressed emotionally.
Sonowal highlighted the elevation of Majuli to full district status as a major administrative accomplishment, significantly reducing residents' dependency on Jorhat and Dispur for official governmental work. He also pitched the riverine island's vast tourism potential, describing it as a "pollution-free region with immense potential to become a premier global tourism destination." Concurrently, he stressed the urgent need for generating youth employment and advancing women's empowerment initiatives in the area.
Throwing his full support behind BJP candidate Bhuban Gam, Sonowal praised his simplicity and strong grassroots connection, noting that this approachability remains the leader's greatest political asset.

Concluding his campaign events with a powerful rallying cry, Sonowal urged voters to deliver a strong and decisive mandate. "Majuli's strength will undoubtedly strengthen Assam, and a robust, united Assam will significantly contribute to building a stronger, more prosperous India," he declared, encapsulating his campaign message.
