Sopana Sangeetham Artist Njeralathu Harigovindan Joins IUML, Citing Party's Secular Values
In a significant political development in Kerala, renowned Sopana Sangeetham artist Njeralathu Harigovindan formally joined the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) on Friday. The artist, son of legendary Sopana Sangeetham exponent Njeralathu Rama Poduval, emphasized that his decision was driven by the party's steadfast commitment to secularism and humanism in practice.
A Decade-Long Affirmation Realized
Addressing the media after receiving membership from IUML state president Panakkad Sadikali Shihab Thangal in Kozhikode, Harigovindan revealed that his association with the party was a long-held intention. "Ten years ago, I had stated, including on social media platforms, that if I were to align with any political movement, it would be the IUML," he declared. He highlighted that at a time when many political parties often say one thing and do another, the IUML distinguishes itself by genuinely practicing its professed values.
"IUML stands out for not just professing secularism and humanism but actively embodying these principles. This authenticity is why the party is gaining relevance not only in Kerala but across the entire nation," Harigovindan asserted. He expressed hope that his decision would inspire more individuals, including those from diverse faiths and backgrounds, to consider joining the IUML.
Criticism of Left Parties and Polarization Concerns
The artist did not shy away from critiquing other political factions, particularly expressing disappointment with Left parties. Harigovindan noted that he had expected these parties to resist social polarization, but recent statements from their leaders and their treatment of figures like SNDP Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan have revealed a different reality. "They appear to be birds of the same feather as the Sangh Parivar, which deeply frightens me as an artist committed to cultural harmony," he stated, underscoring his alarm at such approaches.
Dispelling Misconceptions About IUML
Harigovindan also addressed common misconceptions about the IUML, which is often perceived externally as a purely religious organization. "From the outside, people frequently misunderstand it as solely a religious outfit, and I aim to correct that misconception," he explained. He elaborated by citing concrete examples of the party's humanistic actions, such as when Panakkad Mohammedali Shihab Thangal rushed to the Angadipuram Shiva Temple during a fire incident.
"This was not merely a symbolic gesture of communal harmony but provided genuine confidence and support to a large community," Harigovindan emphasized, illustrating how the IUML's deeds align with its words.
Future Political Engagement
Looking ahead, Harigovindan expressed his willingness to actively participate in the party's activities. He confirmed that if the IUML requests, he is prepared to take part in election campaigns, signaling his commitment to contributing to the party's political endeavors. This move marks a notable crossover of a cultural icon into the political arena, potentially influencing public perception and engagement.
The joining of Harigovindan to the IUML underscores the ongoing political dynamics in Kerala, where cultural and religious identities often intersect with political affiliations. His endorsement highlights the party's efforts to broaden its appeal beyond traditional bases, emphasizing secular and humanistic values as core tenets.
