Samajwadi Party's Bhiwandi Unit Issues Show-Cause Notice to MLA Rais Sheikh
The Samajwadi Party's Bhiwandi city unit has taken a stern step by issuing a show-cause notice to party MLA Rais Sheikh, accusing him of engaging in anti-party activities and displaying indiscipline. This move has sparked fresh indications of an internal rift within the party, highlighting ongoing tensions that could impact its political standing in the region.
Allegations of Violations and Undermining Party Unity
In the notice, Bhiwandi city president Anas Ansari alleged that Sheikh has repeatedly violated the party constitution, flouted discipline, and ignored official directives on multiple occasions. The notice specifically claims that the MLA made public statements against the party leadership and participated in activities that directly undermined party unity, creating confusion among cadres and adversely affecting the party's political interests in Bhiwandi.
Key allegations include:
- Violation of party constitution and discipline
- Public criticism of party leadership
- Activities that harm party unity
- Multiple complaints from party workers and office bearers
Campaigning for Opposition Parties During Civic Elections
Referring to the recent Bhiwandi Municipal Corporation elections, the party alleged that Sheikh was seen actively campaigning for candidates of the Indian National Congress, which it termed a serious breach of party discipline. Party sources further claimed that during the civic polls, Sheikh stayed away from campaigning for Samajwadi Party candidates and was instead seen supporting candidates from Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party, even appearing on their campaign posters.
"The notice warns that such actions could invite strict disciplinary measures, including suspension or expulsion from the party," a party insider revealed. Sheikh has been given 14 days to submit a written explanation, failing which the party has stated it will initiate appropriate action without further communication.
Sheikh's Denial and Ongoing Internal Differences
Sheikh, however, has denied the allegations, stating, "I haven't received any such show-cause notice. I only saw it on social media and the allegations made in it are baseless." Party sources indicated that this development comes amid ongoing differences between Sheikh and state party president Abu Asim Azmi, suggesting deeper internal conflicts within the Samajwadi Party's Maharashtra unit.
The issuance of this notice underscores the challenges faced by political parties in maintaining discipline and unity, especially during election periods. It also raises questions about the future political alignment in Bhiwandi and the potential repercussions for the Samajwadi Party's local influence.
