SP's 2024 LS Poll Strategy of Winnability and PDA Representation Continues for 2027 UP Assembly Elections
SP Repeats 2024 LS Strategy for 2027 UP Assembly Polls

Lucknow: The Samajwadi Party (SP) is once again employing the dual strategy of winnability and meaningful representation of the PDA (Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) in shortlisting candidates for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections. This approach was the hallmark of the party's successful 2024 Lok Sabha poll strategy.

Candidate Selection Process Enters Second Phase

The selection of candidates is currently in its second phase. In the first phase, which concluded about a fortnight ago, candidates were shortlisted for 150 seats spread across 30 districts. The entire screening process is expected to be completed by the second week of July.

Curiosity Over SP's Caste Calculus

Political circles are abuzz with curiosity about whether SP will revert to its traditional Muslim-Yadav domination in candidate selection or repeat the 'out of the box' strategy of 2024, where Scheduled Caste candidates were fielded on general seats. Party insiders caution that it is too early to make definitive statements, as the shortlisting is still underway. A clearer picture will emerge once the process is complete.

Selection Methodology Similar to 2024 Lok Sabha Polls

The process for candidate selection mirrors that of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Meetings are held district-wise as open house sessions. Ticket seekers and district unit office bearers sit together before the national president and his aides. Candidates present their roadmap to victory, and district office bearers provide their assessment on each candidate, all face-to-face.

Winnability and PDA Spirit as Key Criteria

Informed party functionaries state that a foolproof winnability roadmap complementing the 'spirit of PDA' are the essential prerequisites for the right candidate. The 'spirit of PDA' primarily refers to candidates representing the PDA demography.

Unlike the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, where winnability was the deciding factor, this time strategists are keen on proper representation of castes and communities in proportion to their population. However, a party functionary clarified, "This does not mean that winnability will be sacrificed at the altar of candidate's caste or religion."

Senior Leader Emphasizes Balanced Approach

Senior party functionary and former MLC Udaiveer Singh stated, "Winnability is a major factor but not the only one. What is equally important is that the right candidate has to compliment the spirit of PDA as well." He added that the weightage given by district unit office bearers to a ticket aspirant will be a highpoint in selection. Party national president Akhilesh Yadav is personally supervising the process, and his call will be final and binding.

Assembly Seat Composition

In the 403-member state assembly, 84 seats are reserved for Scheduled Castes (SC) and 2 for Scheduled Tribes (ST), while 317 seats are unreserved.

2024 Lok Sabha Precedent

In the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, SP fielded Awadhesh Prasad from Faizabad and Sunita Verma from Meerut – both general seats. While Awadhesh Prasad won, Sunita Verma lost to BJP's Arun Govil by a slender margin of just over 10,500 votes.
