Sri Rama Sene, a right-wing outfit, has demanded that the Karnataka government withdraw its recent circular permitting the wearing of hijab in schools. The organization's joint secretary, Hemanth, criticized the move, alleging that it is an attempt to appease the Muslim community for electoral gains.
Allegations of Vote-Bank Politics
Speaking to the media, Hemanth stated, "The people suspect that this decision to allow hijab is solely to win over Muslim voters. It is a clear case of vote-bank politics." He urged the state government to reconsider the circular and uphold the earlier ban on religious attire in educational institutions.
Background of the Hijab Controversy
The hijab issue has been a contentious topic in Karnataka since early 2022, when a government order banned religious clothing in schools and colleges. The matter escalated into protests and legal battles, eventually reaching the Karnataka High Court and the Supreme Court. The recent circular, issued by the state education department, reversed the ban, sparking fresh outrage among certain groups.
Sri Rama Sene's Stance
Sri Rama Sene has been a vocal opponent of the hijab in schools, arguing that it disrupts the secular fabric of educational institutions. The organization has threatened to launch agitations if the circular is not withdrawn. "We will not allow any religious symbol to be imposed in schools. This is a violation of the uniform policy and promotes communalism," Hemanth added.
The demand comes amid a broader debate on religious freedom versus uniform discipline in educational settings. While some support the circular as a step towards inclusivity, others view it as a threat to secularism.
