The historic Sulekere lake in Maddur taluk of Mandya district is undergoing a dramatic transformation into a 'Mini KRS' tourism hub as part of an ambitious rejuvenation project. Massive Rs 100 Crore Restoration Project Accelerates
The large-scale restoration project, estimated at nearly Rs 100 crore, has gained substantial momentum with tenders worth Rs 82 crore already floated. Authorities are working at an accelerated pace to complete this transformative initiative, which represents one of the most significant lake restoration efforts in Karnataka.
Maddur MLA Kadalur Udaya Gowda revealed that the lake may be rechristened to reflect its renewed identity and upgraded status as a premier tourism destination. This symbolic renaming would mark the lake's transition from a neglected water body to a celebrated regional attraction.
Clearing Extensive Encroachments and Restoring Ecological Balance
Situated between Kannali, Ambarahalli and Madarahalli villages, Sulekere lake was once among the largest lakes in Mandya district but had suffered extensive encroachments by nearby farmers over the years. Authorities have now successfully cleared nearly 300 acres of illegally occupied land, restoring a significant portion of the lake to its original boundaries.
The lake covers approximately 1,000 acres with a circumference of roughly 12.5 kilometers, highlighting its substantial ecological and historical significance to the region. This massive restoration effort represents a crucial step in reclaiming vital water resources for community use.
Creating a Tourism Destination with 'Mini KRS' Appeal
A major attraction of the rejuvenated Sulekere lake will be its impressive 1.1-kilometer-long embankment, which offers panoramic views reminiscent of the famous Krishnaraja Sagar dam.
