Suvendu Adhikari Becomes First BJP CM of Bengal

Kolkata: With Suvendu Adhikari being sworn in as the ninth chief minister of West Bengal and the first from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the change of power in the state was officially reflected in his social media biography on Saturday. Amid the saffron wave, the words 'chief minister' appeared for the first time in Adhikari's bio on his official Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) pages.

Mamata Banerjee's Bio Update

Mamata Banerjee, who has refused to resign in protest, updated her bio note to describe herself as the founder chairperson of the All India Trinamool Congress and 'chief minister of West Bengal (15th, 16th and 17th Vidhan Sabha).' The words 'former CM' were carefully avoided, in line with her ongoing protest against the election results.

Election Mandate and Transition

The BJP secured a strong mandate in the 294-member Assembly, winning 207 seats and ending the 15-year-long Trinamool Congress rule in the state. Former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who came to office in 2011, has not formally tendered her resignation from the post. The transition marks a significant political shift in West Bengal, with Adhikari becoming the first BJP leader to hold the top office in the state.

Adhikari's swearing-in ceremony was attended by several prominent BJP leaders, signaling the party's commitment to its governance agenda in the state. The new chief minister is expected to focus on development, law and order, and fulfilling the promises made during the election campaign.

Political analysts view this change as a major realignment in West Bengal's political landscape, with implications for future state and national politics. The update of social media bios, while symbolic, underscores the formal transfer of power and the beginning of a new era in the state's governance.
