Bula Chowdhury's Hooghly Home Burgled Again: Swimmer in Trauma, Fears for Life
Swimmer Bula Chowdhury's home burgled for second time

In a shocking repeat incident, the residence of celebrated Indian swimmer and Padma Shri awardee Bula Chowdhury in Hind Motor, Hooghly district, West Bengal, has been targeted by burglars for the second time in less than five months. The athlete, who has represented India on numerous international platforms, has been left traumatized and now fears for her personal safety.

A Repeated Nightmare for the Champion

The latest break-in occurred on Saturday. Chowdhury had visited her brother's nearby house to attend a puja. Upon her return, she was met with a scene of devastation. The intruders had broken the window grills, ransacked the house, and even damaged fixtures like taps and basins. This violation comes just months after a major theft at the same property on August 15, 2025, where over 290 of her hard-earned medals were stolen. Although two individuals were arrested and the medals were recovered following that incident, the latest burglary has shattered any sense of security.

"What can I say, even with police security, people are breaking in," a distressed Chowdhury told The Indian Express. She highlighted the challenge of living in Kolkata while trying to maintain her Hooghly home. "I had gone to my brother's house. So I thought, 'Why not go home and get some of the winter clothes?'..." she recounted, detailing the moment she discovered the burglary.

Security Measures Failed, Trauma Deepens

Following the August theft, the police had deployed two civic volunteers for security at her home. However, this measure proved ineffective. Chowdhury expressed her anguish and frustration over the apparent breakdown in law and order. "The police had posted two civic volunteers after the theft, but it's all the same. There is no law and order. There is nothing left of my house," she stated.

The psychological impact on the champion swimmer is severe. "I have not repaired anything. I am completely in trauma. If I stay here, there is also a risk to my own life," Chowdhury revealed, pointing to the direct threat she now perceives. In a poignant and ironic remark, she added, "I used to think about how many medals I would win, but now I think I am going to set a record in the number of times thieves enter and ransack my house."

Police Investigation Underway

In response to the crime, Bula Chowdhury filed a formal complaint at the Uttarpara police station. Authorities have initiated an investigation to determine how the burglars managed to breach the premises despite the presence of security. "The inspector in charge visited my home and collected some evidence," Chowdhury confirmed.

While the police are yet to release an official statement regarding the second break-in, sources have indicated that the probe is active. The central question remains how such a brazen theft could occur again at the home of a prominent national figure, raising serious concerns about the efficacy of protective measures for citizens in the area.

This repeated targeting not only represents a significant personal and material loss for Bula Chowdhury but also casts a shadow over the safety and security environment in the region. The incident has moved beyond a simple property crime, evolving into a situation where a renowned sportsperson feels her life is at risk in her own home.
