Tamil Film and TV Stars Enter Political Arena as Campaigns Ramp Up
As election campaigns gain momentum across Tamil Nadu, a significant number of Tamil film actors and television serial artistes have thrown their weight behind multiple political parties, creating a dynamic and highly visible electoral landscape. This involvement highlights the deep connections between the entertainment industry and state politics.
Notable Shifts in Political Allegiances
In a surprising move, former AIADMP MP Ramarajan, renowned for his role in 'Karagattakaran', has transitioned to campaigning for the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Ramarajan, who represented Tiruchendur and actively supported AIADMK until the 2024 elections, recently canvassed in Alangulam for TVK candidate V Vipin Chakravarthi. He explained his decision by citing long-standing personal relationships, noting that Vipin's family has been his friend for nearly three decades and supported his 2024 film 'Samaniyan' by screening it in their theatre when others declined.
"Though I will continue to be an AIADMK cadre, I will campaign for TVK since Vijay is also my brother and I wish him all success and reach great heights," Ramarajan stated, emphasizing his dual allegiance.
Actors Rally Behind TVK and Criticize Opponents
Actor Ponnambalam, who previously campaigned for AIADMK and BJP, has also endorsed TVK. While campaigning for Cumbum candidate P L A Jaganath Mishra, Ponnambalam asserted that TVK leader Vijay enjoys widespread public support. He took a sharp jab at the DMDK, remarking, "The person who gave me my identity was 'Captain' Vijayakanth. But now Premallatha Vijayakanth has joined the 'evil force', DMK. She may think it will bring victory, but it will not."
DMK and AIADMK Campaign Efforts Gain Star Power
On the DMK front, actor Nalini campaigned on Tuesday for V G Rajendran in Tiruvallur. Speaking to reporters, she expressed confidence in a substantial victory margin, saying, "Several are predicting a margin of 50,000 votes. But I believe he will win by a margin of one lakh votes for the work he has done for the people."
Meanwhile, in the AIADMK camp, actor Gautami has been actively campaigning over the past week in and around Chennai, supporting NDA candidates in Virugambakkam, Chengalpet, and Tiruttani. She focused her efforts on highlighting local issues affecting these constituencies. Additionally, actor Vaiyapuri campaigned in Uthangarai and Madurai, advocating for the return of AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami.
Broader Implications of Celebrity Involvement
The active participation of these entertainment figures underscores the strategic use of celebrity influence in Tamil Nadu's political campaigns. Their public endorsements and grassroots efforts are likely to sway voter sentiments, particularly among fans and local communities. As the election date approaches, the visibility of these actors on the campaign trail is expected to intensify, making celebrity support a key factor in the electoral battleground.
