Tamil Nadu Districts Ramp Up Election Monitoring as Model Code of Conduct Takes Effect
With the model code of conduct (MCC) now officially in force for the upcoming assembly elections, district administrations across Tamil Nadu have launched comprehensive enforcement operations. In Madurai and Trichy, authorities are implementing stringent measures to ensure electoral integrity, focusing on technological surveillance and visible compliance actions.
GPS Tracking for Election Enforcement Vehicles
The Madurai district administration has intensified the installation of global positioning system (GPS) devices on all vehicles assigned to election flying squads, static surveillance teams, and video surveillance teams. This technological upgrade enables officials to monitor these vehicles in real time, tracking their exact locations, duration of halts, and specific patrol routes.
Officials emphasized that this GPS integration effectively eliminates blind spots in the district's security grid, creating a transparent and accountable digital record of all monitoring activities. The primary objective is strict enforcement of the MCC, with real-time tracking ensuring swift responses to complaints about illegal distribution of cash or gifts to voters.
Removal of Political Material and Public Advisories
Simultaneously, both districts have initiated widespread removal of political material. In Madurai, workers began removing welfare posters of the government and portraits of political leaders from the district collectorate on Sunday. Trichy corporation workers similarly removed political wall posters and graffiti from prominent areas including Thennur High Road and Collector Office Road.
Trichy District Collector V Saravanan announced that from Monday, the corporation would intensify removal of political graffiti from bridges and other public areas. He also issued crucial public advisories regarding financial transactions during the election period.
Financial Restrictions and Enforcement Teams
In a press release, Collector Saravanan urged citizens not to carry cash worth ₹50,000 or above without supporting documents. As flying squad and static surveillance squad teams will be conducting routine vehicular inspections on roads to prevent parties from bribing and mobilizing gifts for voters, authorities have advised the public and traders against carrying goods worth more than ₹10,000 without proper justification.
Trichy district has formed 54 specialized teams to check offences and MCC violations across its nine assembly constituencies. These teams will work alongside police personnel who conducted random vehicular inspections in parts of the city on Sunday.
Weapon Surrender and Election Control Room
In additional security measures, Collector Saravanan directed people owning licensed arms and weapons to surrender them to local police stations to ensure public safety and prevent intimidation during the election period. The district has also established an election control room at the collector's office, operational with multiple helpline numbers.
Citizens can report election-related offences by contacting helplines 0431-2905846, 2905921, 2905578, 2905591, and 2905813. This comprehensive approach combines technological surveillance, physical enforcement, and public engagement to maintain electoral integrity as Tamil Nadu prepares for the assembly elections.
