Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections: Campaigning Concludes Ahead of Crucial Polling Day
Campaigning for the highly anticipated Tamil Nadu assembly elections has officially drawn to a close, setting the stage for a single-phase polling event scheduled for Thursday. Voters across all 234 assembly constituencies will cast their ballots in what is expected to be a fiercely contested electoral battle.
A Direct Contest Between Major Alliances
The election is largely projected as a direct confrontation between two prominent political coalitions. On one side stands the DMK-led ruling Secular Progressive Alliance, while the opposing front is the National Democratic Alliance, with the AIADMK serving as its largest constituent within the state. The national parties have aligned accordingly, with Congress supporting the DMK and the BJP partnering with the AIADMK, the DMK's long-standing arch-rival.
Adding an intriguing dimension to the race is the entry of superstar Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), a party launched in February 2024. TVK is anticipated to attract a significant portion of the youth vote, having fielded candidates in all 234 seats. The political landscape is further enlivened by over 4,000 candidates vying for positions, including several high-profile names that have captured public attention.
Key Candidates and Their Constituencies
The electoral fray features a roster of notable contenders, each with distinct political trajectories:
- MK Stalin and Udhayanidhi Stalin (DMK): Chief Minister MK Stalin, a multiple-term MLA, is contesting from Kolathur, a constituency he has represented since 2011. His son and Deputy Chief Minister, Udhayanidhi Stalin, aims to retain the Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni seat for the DMK, having emerged victorious in the 2021 polls.
- Vijay (TVK): The actor-politician is leading his party from the front, contesting from two constituencies: Tiruchirapalli East and Perambur. His participation marks a significant development in Tamil Nadu's political narrative.
- Edappadi K Palaniswami (AIADMK): As the AIADMK general secretary and the NDA's chief ministerial face, Palaniswami is seeking a fourth successive term from his home turf of Edappadi, which he has held since 2011.
- O Panneerselvam (DMK): In a surprising political shift, former AIADMK loyalist and ex-chief minister O Panneerselvam has joined the DMK ahead of the polls. The Stalin-led party has fielded him from his stronghold of Bodinayakkanur, where he won three consecutive elections—2011, 2016, and 2021—under the AIADMK banner.
- Tamilisai Soundararajan (BJP): A senior BJP leader and former Telangana governor, Soundararajan is contesting from the Mylapore constituency. She previously served as president of the party's Tamil Nadu unit and as Puducherry's lieutenant governor.
- Nainar Nagendran (BJP): The BJP's state unit chief has shifted from the Tirunelveli constituency, which he won in 2021, to contest from Sattur in this election.
Polling and Counting Schedule
With campaigning now concluded, all eyes are on Thursday's polling day, where voters will determine the fate of these candidates and alliances. The counting of votes is scheduled for May 4, a date that will unveil the electoral outcome and shape Tamil Nadu's political future. The high-stakes nature of this election underscores its significance in the state's democratic process, with issues such as freebies and youth engagement playing pivotal roles in the campaign discourse.
