Travancore Devaswom Board Unveils Separate Budget for Sabarimala Pilgrimage

In a significant move to bolster financial control and curb revenue losses, the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) has announced the introduction of a separate budget specifically for the annual Sabarimala pilgrimage. Board president K Jayakumar made this declaration on Monday, following a board meeting in Thiruvananthapuram.

Enhanced Financial Oversight and Streamlined Management

Jayakumar explained that the dedicated budget is designed to streamline financial operations during the pilgrimage season, enabling more efficient management and quicker account clarifications post-season. An audit of all income and expenditure will be conducted immediately after the Mandala-Makaravilakku festival, with a comprehensive report to be prepared. This initiative aims to tighten financial oversight, minimize unnecessary spending, and boost revenue mobilization efforts.

Comprehensive Sanitation and Safety Upgrades

In addition to financial reforms, the TDB has resolved to strengthen sanitation measures at Sabarimala. A detailed sanitation protocol will be developed in collaboration with the Suchitwa Mission and subject experts, with the ambitious goal of making the pilgrimage site completely plastic-free. New guidelines will also be introduced for the auctioning of shops operating during the pilgrimage period, ensuring better regulation and transparency.

Health certificates will become mandatory for all workers, and contract agreements will now include provisions for wiring and fire safety. Jayakumar emphasized that these revised terms will hold both the board and contractors equally accountable for compliance, fostering a safer environment for pilgrims.

Modernization of Contract and Tendering Processes

All contract conditions related to Sabarimala will undergo a thorough review and update. To enhance transparency and efficiency, the TDB plans to adopt a modern tendering system modeled after the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB). This shift is expected to reduce corruption and improve operational standards.

Infrastructure and Operational Readiness

Jayakumar confirmed that the pilgrimage office at Pamba will be fully operational by Vishu, in preparation for the upcoming Mandala-Makaravilakku festival. Special board meetings will be held at this new office, facilitating better on-ground coordination and management during the pilgrimage season.

This holistic approach by the TDB underscores a commitment to transforming the Sabarimala pilgrimage into a more organized, safe, and financially sustainable event, benefiting millions of devotees annually.
