Telangana Government Unveils Major Sports Infrastructure Development Plan
In a significant move to bolster the state's sporting ecosystem, Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy announced on Saturday that the historic LB Stadium and the prominent Gachibowli Stadium will undergo comprehensive upgrades to meet international standards. This ambitious initiative aims to position Hyderabad as a premier destination for hosting both national and global sporting events in the coming years.
Reviving Sporting Traditions and Fostering Camaraderie
The announcement came during the inauguration of the first edition of the Telangana Legislators' Sports and Cultural Meet-2026 at LB Stadium. This event marks the revival of a cherished tradition from the undivided state era, bringing together the chief minister, deputy chief minister, ministers, MLAs, and MLCs for friendly competition and cultural exchange.
"This meet is not merely about winning or losing; it is about building stronger bonds and camaraderie among our public representatives," emphasized Chief Minister Reddy. He highlighted the historical significance of LB Stadium, noting that two of his cabinet colleagues, Mohammed Azaruddin and Vakiti Srihari, honed their skills there before achieving success in international and Ranji cricket, respectively.
Expressing regret over the stadium's previous use for political events during the prior administration, Reddy reaffirmed its original purpose as a platform for showcasing "magnificent sportsmanship."
Comprehensive Upgrades and Additional Developments
Beyond the two flagship stadiums, the chief minister revealed plans to upgrade the Begumpet hockey ground, further expanding the state's sports infrastructure. He passionately urged students to balance academics with sports participation, pledging full government support for those pursuing athletic careers.
Addressing recent controversies, Reddy defended the visit of football icon Lionel Messi to Hyderabad, asserting that such high-profile events elevate the city's global prestige and should be celebrated rather than politicized.
Two-Day Legislators' Meet and Fit Telangana Campaign
The inaugural ceremony of the two-day legislators' meet saw participation from across political parties, featuring a diverse lineup of events including kabaddi, chess, athletics, volleyball, carrom, and football, complemented by vibrant cultural programs.
On this occasion, Chief Minister Reddy officially launched the brochure for the 'Fit Telangana Campaign,' a statewide initiative promoting health and wellness. The event was graced by Legislative Council Chairman Gutha Sukender Reddy, who delivered the welcome address, alongside Assembly Speaker G Prasad Kumar and Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka.
