Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has launched a sharp attack on his Maharashtra counterpart over the Tummidihatti issue and criticized the Centre for its handling of the paddy procurement row. In a strongly worded statement, Reddy singled out Union Minister G Kishan Reddy for his silence on the matter and issued a warning that if the Centre failed to respond adequately, the state government would symbolically dump procured paddy outside the minister's residence.
Revanth Reddy's Allegations
Speaking to reporters, Revanth Reddy accused the Maharashtra government of neglecting the concerns of Telangana farmers regarding the Tummidihatti project, which he claimed was affecting water resources in the region. He demanded immediate intervention from the central government to resolve the dispute. The Telangana CM also took aim at Union Minister G Kishan Reddy, a senior BJP leader from Telangana, for remaining silent on the issue despite representing the state in the Union Cabinet.
Paddy Procurement Crisis
On the paddy procurement front, Revanth Reddy alleged that the Centre was deliberately delaying the procurement process, causing distress to farmers. He warned that if the central government did not take corrective measures soon, the state government would be forced to take drastic steps, including dumping paddy at G Kishan Reddy's residence. This symbolic act, he said, would highlight the plight of farmers and the Centre's indifference.
The chief minister emphasized that Telangana had consistently produced surplus paddy and that the state government had made all necessary arrangements for procurement. However, he accused the Centre of not fulfilling its responsibilities, leading to a backlog and financial losses for farmers.
Political Reactions
The remarks have sparked a political firestorm, with the BJP accusing Revanth Reddy of resorting to gimmicks rather than addressing the issue through proper channels. Meanwhile, opposition parties in Telangana have rallied behind the CM, demanding that the Centre take immediate action. The Maharashtra government has yet to officially respond to the allegations regarding Tummidihatti.
The development comes amid ongoing tensions between Telangana and neighbouring states over water sharing and agricultural policies. Revanth Reddy's aggressive stance is seen as an attempt to consolidate farmer support ahead of upcoming elections in the state.
