Telangana Officials Launch Crackdown on LPG Cylinder Misuse

In a significant enforcement action, civil supplies officials in Telangana have seized approximately 300 domestic LPG cylinders from hotels and restaurants across several districts over the past two days. The raids targeted establishments in Nalgonda, Mahabubnagar, Karimnagar, and other areas, uncovering widespread misuse of cylinders intended for household use.

District-Wide Seizures and Legal Action

Authorities have registered multiple cases under Section 6A of the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, citing violations including hoarding, black-marketing, and unauthorized movement of essential commodities. "In the last two days, we seized 124 cylinders and registered four cases. The worth of the seized cylinders is Rs 2.7 lakh," stated Nalgonda civil supplies official B Chandrashekar.

Chandrashekar emphasized that gas agencies in Nalgonda district currently maintain a stock of 8,118 cylinders, assuring residents that there is no shortage of domestic LPG despite the crackdown.

Specific Operations Across Districts

The enforcement drive revealed concerning patterns of misuse:

  • Nirmal Town: Officials inspected 16 hotels and confiscated 29 domestic cylinders being used for commercial purposes.
  • Mahabubnagar and Jadcherla: Authorities registered 31 cases and seized 54 cylinders from various establishments.
  • Khammam District: Collector Anudeep Durishetty declared that "misuse and black marketing of domestic gas will not be tolerated," as officials seized 18 cylinders from local hotels and restaurants.
  • Karimnagar: Officials seized 39 domestic cylinders and registered 15 cases against violators.

Broader Implications and Official Stance

This coordinated operation highlights the government's commitment to preventing the diversion of subsidized domestic LPG cylinders to commercial establishments. Such misuse not only violates regulations but also potentially deprives households of essential cooking fuel.

Civil supplies officials have made it clear that strict monitoring will continue to ensure domestic cylinders reach intended consumers and are not exploited for commercial gain. The crackdown serves as a warning to businesses attempting to circumvent regulations through unauthorized procurement and use of household LPG supplies.
