Leader of Opposition in the Himachal Pradesh assembly, Jai Ram Thakur, launched a sharp attack on the state's Congress government on Tuesday, accusing it of hitting a new low in political conduct. The senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader alleged a "limitless political and moral decline" by the ruling party, claiming government machinery was being misused to target political opponents.
Government Departments Acting as 'Troll Armies': Thakur
In a serious allegation, the former Chief Minister stated that departments meant to showcase government achievements have devolved into tools for political propaganda. Thakur claimed these departments are now functioning like "troll armies," creating and disseminating cheap posters against opposition parties instead of focusing on public service and development communication.
He criticised this shift, emphasising that public resources and institutions should not be weaponised for partisan battles. This, according to Thakur, is a clear sign of the administration's desperation and ethical downfall.
Scathing Critique on Drug Policy & Rehabilitation Failure
Moving beyond political accusations, Thakur also condemned the state government's handling of the drug abuse crisis. He highlighted several recent drug overdose deaths across Himachal, pointing to them as evidence of a failing system.
The senior leader lamented the lack of proper rehabilitation and de-addiction facilities in the state's medical colleges. He argued that the government's so-called war on drugs is superficial, limited to "event management and headlines." Thakur cited previous initiatives like the ‘Drug-Free Himachal' mobile application and the anti-narcotics task force, claiming they have been undermined and are no longer effective, leaving the youth vulnerable.
Meeting in Delhi and Political Wishes
Amidst his critique of the Himachal government, Thakur also met with BJP's national working president, Nitin Nabin, in Delhi. He extended his congratulations to Nabin on his role and expressed wishes for success under his leadership, showcasing the ongoing political engagements at the national level.
Thakur's comprehensive attack underscores the deepening political rift in Himachal Pradesh. It frames the opposition's narrative around governance misuse and policy failure on critical issues like narcotics control, setting the stage for continued confrontation in the state assembly.
