In a significant development, the Thiruvananthapuram district panchayat on Monday presented a comprehensive and surplus budget for the 2026–27 financial year. This budget marks the first fiscal plan introduced by the new ruling committee, showcasing a robust financial outlook with a projected total revenue of Rs 10,64,94,40,521 and total expenditure of Rs 10,59,30,63,678, resulting in a surplus of Rs 5,63,76,843.

The budget was formally presented by Vice President B P Murali at a function held in the district panchayat hall. Panchayat President V Priyadarshini emphasized the budget's comprehensive nature, stating, "This is a comprehensive budget that ensures environmental sustainability, new employment opportunities, and quality education while extending a helping hand to the underprivileged." The budget aims to address multiple sectors with strategic allocations designed to foster development and inclusivity across the district.

Major Allocations and Initiatives

The budget outlines several key financial commitments across various sectors:

  • Public Works: A major highlight is the allocation of Rs 40 crore for public works, aimed at enhancing infrastructure and community facilities.
  • Housing Projects: Housing initiatives have been allotted Rs 17 crore to support affordable and sustainable living solutions.
  • Agriculture Sector: In the agriculture sector, Rs 4 crore has been earmarked for infrastructure development to boost productivity and support farmers.
  • Healthcare: Healthcare received a significant allocation of Rs 7.80 crore, with plans to introduce transgender-friendly clinics in district hospitals to promote inclusive health services.

Additionally, a comprehensive livelihood scheme titled 'Mazhavillu' was proposed, focusing on creating sustainable employment opportunities and economic empowerment for residents.
