Thiruvananthapuram District Records Impressive 76.98% Voter Turnout in 2026 Elections
The state capital of Thiruvananthapuram demonstrated robust democratic participation during the fiercely contested 2026 elections, with the district achieving an overall polling percentage of 76.98% as of 8 PM. This marks a notable increase from the 72.06% recorded in the previous electoral cycle, reflecting heightened voter enthusiasm across the region.
Constituency-Wise Performance Highlights
All fourteen assembly constituencies within the district successfully crossed the 70% voter turnout threshold. Kattakada emerged as the leader with an impressive 80.72% participation, closely followed by Nemom at 80.62% and Kazhakkoottam at 78.67%. In contrast, Attingal (73.74%), Varkala (73.96%), and Chirayinkeezhu (74.13%) recorded relatively lower turnouts, despite having reported higher participation rates during the 2021 elections.
Urban Constituencies Reverse Historical Trends
A defining characteristic of the 2026 election was the strong voter engagement in urban constituencies, effectively reversing a long-standing pattern of lower participation in city areas. Key urban centers including Thiruvananthapuram, Vattiyoorkavu, Nemom, and Kazhakkoottam experienced brisk polling activity from the early morning hours.
By 1:30 PM, these constituencies had already surpassed the 50% mark and proceeded to exceed 70% by evening. Long queues were visible at numerous polling booths as early as 7 AM in Thiruvananthapuram, Nemom, Kazhakkoottam, and Vattiyoorkavu, indicating substantial voter enthusiasm.
Coastal Regions Show Significant Participation
Coastal areas also witnessed considerable voter engagement, with notable participation among women voters. Polling stations in Kanjirakulam, Vizhinjam, Beemapally, Poonthura, and Adimalathura reported lengthy queues during morning hours. Early voters experienced waiting times of 15 to 20 minutes, while those arriving later in the day benefited from reduced crowding and quicker voting processes.
Polling activity experienced a temporary slowdown during the afternoon before regaining momentum in the evening hours. Weather conditions played a role in turnout patterns, with a brief lull followed by renewed participation later in the day.
Voter Experiences and Feedback
D S Binulal, who cast his vote in Tirumala, reported steady turnout at his polling booth. "It took approximately 20 minutes to complete the voting process at 10:45 AM. My mother, a senior citizen, was able to vote in just 10 minutes," he stated.
Many voters reported smoother overall experiences compared to previous elections. Varghese S from Vazhuthacaud noted that reduced crowding and streamlined voter lists made the process more efficient, particularly during afternoon hours. Similar positive feedback was received from polling centers such as the Salvation Army School in Kowdiar and various booths in Tirumala, where waiting times ranged between 10 and 20 minutes.
Despite an unexpected spell of summer rain in the evening, voter turnout remained steady, especially in coastal areas after 4 PM. Polling in sensitive booths proceeded peacefully throughout the day, supported by comprehensive security arrangements.
