Massive Travel Rush in Thiruvananthapuram as Voters Head Home for Elections

Thiruvananthapuram experienced a significant surge in passenger traffic on Wednesday evening, with numerous individuals embarking on journeys to their hometowns to participate in the electoral process. The overwhelming demand for transportation led to considerable congestion in both bus and train services, persisting until late into the night.

Severe Overcrowding on Key Bus Routes

Buses operating on major routes, including those to Kottayam, Ernakulam, Palakkad, and Kozhikode, remained densely packed until approximately 11:30 PM. This unusual influx of travelers caused substantial inconvenience for many passengers, primarily due to the insufficient number of buses available to accommodate the heightened demand.

Numerous commuters expressed frustration over the absence of special trains or additional bus services specifically arranged to facilitate travel for voting purposes. The situation was further exacerbated by the anticipation of a seven-day extended break, resulting from a two-day leave scheduled for Friday and Monday, which contributed to the increased rush.

Passenger Experiences Highlight Transport Shortfalls

Kavya M, a resident traveling to Kollam to cast her vote, shared her challenging experience. "There are no trains operating at night. The buses became extremely crowded starting from 9 PM onward. I had to bypass several buses because of the overwhelming rush and ended up waiting until 11:30 PM. Even the Minnal services were completely full. It would have been beneficial if special buses had been arranged," she remarked.

Kavya added, "I was fortunate to secure a single seat on a Minnal service that departed late at night." Similarly, trains were operating at full capacity from the evening hours, with the railways not introducing any special trains to manage the surge.

Criticism Over Lack of Travel Provisions

Despite the election commission's extensive campaigns and promotional videos encouraging voter participation, adequate provisions for travel were notably lacking. Liyons J, representing Friends on Rail, emphasized the necessity for special train services. "The railways should have operated special trains, considering the large number of people traveling within the state and from neighboring states to exercise their voting rights," he stated.

This oversight in transportation planning has sparked discussions on the need for better coordination between electoral authorities and transport departments to ensure smooth and accessible travel for voters during election periods.
