Tragic Car Plunge in Pithoragarh Claims Three Lives, Leaves One Critical

A heart-wrenching road accident on the scenic yet treacherous Pithoragarh-Munsyari route has left a community in mourning. On Sunday afternoon, a car carrying four friends met with a catastrophic fate, plunging into a 50-meter deep gorge near Madkot. The incident resulted in three immediate fatalities and left one individual fighting for his life in critical condition.

Details of the Fatal Incident

The tragic event unfolded as the group was traveling towards Munsyari, a popular hill station in Uttarakhand. According to official reports from Pithoragarh district disaster mitigation officer Bhupendra Singh Mahar, local villagers were the first to alert authorities about the horrifying accident. The vehicle lost control and tumbled down the steep ravine, triggering a massive emergency response.

Rescue operations were swiftly mobilized with police personnel, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams, and Emergency Ambulance Service 108 converging on the accident site. Despite their rapid deployment, the severity of the crash proved overwhelming for two victims who succumbed to their injuries at the scene.

Victims and Their Backgrounds

The accident claimed the lives of three young individuals from the region:

  • Laxman Negi (30), a resident of Madkot who served as a soldier in the Indian armed forces and was home on leave at the time of the tragedy.
  • Ankit Pande (30), originally from village Daula in Pithoragarh, worked as an engineer for a private company and was operating from his home in Pithoragarh.
  • Ayush Pant (31), a practicing advocate from Pithoragarh who was declared dead upon arrival at the district hospital.

The sole survivor, Devendra Bhatt (27), also from Pithoragarh, was rushed to medical facilities alongside Pant. While doctors pronounced Pant deceased, Bhatt remains hospitalized with critical injuries, his condition described as grave by medical authorities.

Emergency Response and Aftermath

The rescue operation faced significant challenges due to the rugged terrain and the depth of the gorge. Emergency teams worked meticulously to extract the victims from the wreckage and transport them to medical care. District officials have confirmed that investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the accident, with preliminary assessments pointing to possible road conditions or driver error.

This tragic incident highlights the ongoing safety concerns on mountainous roads in Uttarakhand, particularly during the monsoon season when routes become more hazardous. The local community has expressed profound grief over the loss of these young lives, with many calling for improved road safety measures and infrastructure along this vital transportation corridor.
