Mass Protest in Tirupur Over Illegal Mining and Road Destruction
In a dramatic turn of events on Tuesday, more than 100 individuals attempted to surrender before the Tirupur district court, citing their failure to protect local roads and mineral resources from the clutches of the mining mafia. This novel protest was sparked by the authorities' persistent inaction despite repeated petitions to the district collector and other officials to halt illegal mining activities.
Police Detain Protesters for Unlawful Assembly
The Tirupur city police swiftly detained over 100 people for gathering illegally before the court premises. The protesters, comprising residents, farmers, and environmental activists from villages such as Peruntholuvu, Nachipalayam, and Kathanganni, voiced their grievances against the rampant damage caused by heavy vehicles from tar factories, ready-mix concrete plants, and quarries.
They alleged that these vehicles were transporting mineral resources far beyond the permitted limits, leading to severe road deterioration. When the protesters tried to enter the court to surrender, police intervened, restricting their entry and initiating talks. However, the protesters refused to disperse, resulting in their detention.
Environmental Activist Highlights Norm Violations
R S Mugilan, coordinator of the Tamil Nadu Environmental Protection Movement, emphasized the gravity of the situation in a statement to reporters. He pointed out that while village roads are designed to handle a maximum load of 10 tonnes, the heavy vehicles consistently exceed this limit. "Roads laid at a cost of around 15,000 crore in the last five years have been damaged due to this violation," he stated, criticizing the district administration for failing to take legal action against those responsible.
This incident underscores the growing frustration among local communities over environmental degradation and administrative apathy, highlighting the urgent need for stricter enforcement of regulations to safeguard public infrastructure and natural resources.
