Massive Shutdown in Tiruvarur Over Railway's Rerouting Decision
Thousands of shops in Tiruvarur town remained closed on Tuesday as a powerful protest erupted against Southern Railway's decision to reroute the Kamban Express, effectively bypassing the town. The widespread shutdown followed a resolution passed by the Tiruvarur-Vijayapuram Traders Association, which also organized a hunger strike near the Tiruvarur railway station to amplify their dissent.
Railway's Announcement Sparks Public Outrage
On March 13, Southern Railway issued a formal statement declaring that from May 20, the Kamban Express (train numbers 16175/16176) will operate between Velankanni and Tambaram via a revised route. The new path includes Nagapattinam, Nagore, Karaikal, Thirunallar, Peralam, Mayiladuthurai, and Villupuram, conspicuously omitting Tiruvarur from its schedule.
This rerouting decision comes as the restoration of the 23.5-kilometer Peralam–Karaikal line has been completed following recent gauge conversion work. Currently, the train runs between Karaikal and Tambaram, passing through Nagore, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Peralam, Mayiladuthurai, and Villupuram, making Tiruvarur a key stop for many commuters.
Strong Opposition from Residents and Political Leaders
Residents, local traders, and railway activists have voiced strong opposition to the railway's move, arguing that bypassing Tiruvarur will severely impact travel options for people in and around the town. Many regularly depend on the Kamban Express to reach Chennai and its suburbs, and the removal of this service is seen as a significant inconvenience and economic blow.
The protest gained substantial political support, with Nagapattinam MP V Selvaraj, Tiruvarur MLA Poondi K Kalaivanan, Thiruthuraipoondi MLA K Marimuthu, and representatives from various political parties joining the hunger strike. Their presence underscored the widespread discontent and the potential political ramifications of the decision.
